Man Election wellness trends President country What the world can learn from Botswana
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. “I will respectfully step aside," said the man who lost an election, “and participate in a smooth transition process." The speed with which President Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded defeat on November 1st was striking—all the more so given that his Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) had ruled this diamond-rich southern African country for six decades, ever since independence from Britain in 1966. On November 4th Mr Masisi was officially replaced by Duma Boko (pictured), a Harvard-educated lawyer, whose Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) was the first party to defeat the BDP, after 13 attempts.

markets UPS Williams Boeing SpaceX testing Stuck NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore welcome SpaceX capsule that'll bring them home next year
International Space Station since June welcomed their new ride home with Sunday's arrival of a SpaceX capsule. SpaceX launched the rescue mission on Saturday with a downsized crew of two astronauts and two empty seats reserved for Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who will return next year. The Dragon capsule docked in darkness as the two craft soared 265 miles (426 kilometers) above Botswana. NASA switched Wilmore and Williams to SpaceX following concerns over the safety of their Boeing Starliner capsule. It was the first Starliner test flight with a crew, and NASA decided the thruster failures and helium leaks that cropped up after liftoff were too serious and poorly understood to risk the test pilots' return. So Starliner returned to Earth empty earlier this month.

markets Reuters Parke Southern Food Wildlife country Worst drought in four decades: Zimbabwe to cull 200 elephants to feed its people
Zimbabwe, facing the worst drought in four decades, is set to cull 200 elephants to help feed its people, according to wildlife authorities. This decision follows a similar plan by neighbouring Namibia, which announced earlier this month that it would cull 160 wildlife animals, including 83 elephants, due to the severe drought affecting its population. The El Niño-induced drought has devastated southern Africa, leading both Zimbabwe and Namibia to declare states of emergency. The drought has directly impacted 68 million people in the region, resulting in severe food shortages and dire conditions. Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks), told Reuters, “We can confirm that we are planning to cull about 200 elephants across the country. We are working on the details of how this will be carried out.” Farawo also confirmed that the elephant meat will be distributed to communities in Zimbabwe affected by the drought.

Discover President Experts Inside information stars reports Could this 2,492-carat diamond from Botswana be worth $160 million? Here’s all you need to know
diamond discovered in more than a century has been unearthed in Botswana, marking a historic discovery. The stunning 2,492 carat diamond was unveiled during a special ceremony presided over by Botswana's president. This stone, which is about the size of a fist and weighs about a pound, has attracted a lot of interest and enthusiasm, as per the reports of the New York Post. Initial estimates say the diamond may be worth over $40 million, but it is too early to confirm the actual value or complete the sale. The Canadian mining corporation Lucara, which found the diamond at its Karowe Mine, is the source of this information. Some industry insiders, though, think this assessment may be low. Renowned diamond expert Fred Cuellar likened the value of diamonds to that of real estate, where the amount depends on comparable sales in the recent past. Given that a smaller diamond from the same mine sold for $63 million in 2016, Cuellar estimated that the diamond's potential value ranged from $100 million to $160 million.
