Deal to force multinational companies to pay a 15% minimum tax is marred by loopholes, watchdog says
tax havens and force multinational corporations to pay a minimum tax has been weakened by loopholes and will raise only a fraction of the revenue that was envisioned, a tax watchdog backed by the European Union has warned. The landmark agreement, brokered by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, set a minimum global corporate tax of 15%. The idea was to stop multinational corporations, among them Apple and Nike, from using accounting and legal maneuvers to shift earnings to low- or no-tax havens.

Worldcoin Paris office checked by French data watchdog
digital currency firm co-founded by ChatGPT-founder Sam Altman. France's CNIL watchdog said in July that the legality of the Worldcoin biometric data 'seemed questionable'. «Checks took place at the Worldcoin offices,» a CNIL spokesperson said on Thursday, confirming an earlier Politico report that the checks occurred on Wednesday. Worldcoin officials did not immediately respond to an emailed Reuters request for comment on the CNIL's latest checks. The CNIL spokesperson declined further comment. Worldcoin requires users to provide their iris scans in exchange for a digital ID and, in some countries, in exchange for free cryptocurrency.

Suez Canal set to resume normal traffic after collision
Suez Canal within hours, the head of the canal authority said on Wednesday, following the collision of two vessels. «Slight contact» was made after liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier BW Lesmes made a sudden stop due to a technical failure that coincided with a strong current that drove oil tanker Burri towards it, authority chairman Osama Rabie said. The canal authority responded by sending tugboats to move both ships, he said. Singapore-flagged BW Lesmes was successfully towed outside of the waterway, Rabie said, while Cayman Islands-flagged Burri could be seen approaching the southern end of the canal as of 12:00 pm local time, according to ship tracker MarineTraffic. The canal's north convoy will resume once Burri is towed, Rabie said. BW LNG AS, operators of BW Lesmes, reported the vessel ran aground transiting southbound through the Suez Canal at approximately 21:35 (1835 GMT) on Tuesday, BW Group said in a statement. The low speed collision did not affect the vessel's operational capabilities and the vessel «remains structurally sound,» it added. BW Lesmes was successfully re-floated at 03:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday and would undergo further inspections at Suez anchorage. The Suez Canal chairman said there did not appear to be any significant damage or pollution but that Burri had a steering failure that would require repair. TMS Tankers, which manages Burri, did not respond to requests for comment. The Suez Canal is one of the world's busiest waterways and the shortest shipping route between Europe and Asia. About 12% of the world's trade moves through the canal.

Chinese real estate giant Evergrande files for bankruptcy
China Evergrande, which is the world's most heavily indebted property developer and became the poster child for China's property crisis, on Thursday filed for protection from creditors in a US bankruptcy court. The company sought protection under Chapter 15 of the US bankruptcy code, which shields non-US companies that are undergoing restructurings from creditors that hope to sue them or tie up assets in the United States. An affiliate, Tianji Holdings, also sought Chapter 15 protection on Thursday in Manhattan bankruptcy court.
