Top-ranked Jannik Sinner has steroid case appealed by the World Anti-Doping Agency
Jannik Sinner was appealed by the World Anti-Doping Agency, the Montreal-based body announced Saturday. WADA said it is seeking a ban of one to two years for the U.S. Open champion but indicated that it does not plan to back date an eventual ban — which would mean that Sinner could keep his second Grand Slam title if he is found guilty. The announcement was made while Sinner was on court against Roman Safiullin at the China Open in Beijing.

Wuhan is in the news again after the COVID-19 outbreak; this time a Chinese attack submarine sank at a shipyard in the city
Wuhan shipyard, one of China's most recent nuclear-powered assault submarines sank, a US official confirmed, as per reports by Business Insider. The Chinese submarine, which was recorded in the Wuchang shipyard in Wuhan in late May, is believed to be the newest Zhou-class ship. However, it sank at some point after that. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the occurrence. Big, floating cranes were close to the pier in June, according to satellite photos taken by Planet Labs after it sank. It's thought that China has been trying to recover the ship. It was the first submarine of its type to sink. Thomas Shugart, a retired US submarine officer and adjunct senior scholar at the Center for American Security think tank, initially shared pictures of cranes gathered around an object in the water on X in July, near the location where the new submarine had previously been. He also mentioned the oil containment boom and conjectured that odd things were going on. Shugart posted online satellite photos from July 5 that revealed the cranes had moved, presumably completing the presumed salvage operation.

In global game of influence, China turns to cheap and effective tool: fake news
Kurt Campbell travelled to the Solomon Islands to counter Beijing's influence in the South Pacific country, he quickly saw just how far China would go to spread its message. The Biden administration's Asia czar woke up one morning in 2022 to a long article in the local press about the US running chemical and biological labs in Ukraine, a claim that Washington calls an outright lie. Started by Russia, the false and incendiary claim was vigorously amplified by China's vast overseas propaganda apparatus. It was another example of «clearly effective Russian and Chinese disinformation,» Campbell told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in July. Two years later, the claim still reverberates online, demonstrating China's sprawling effort to reshape global perceptions.

After China meeting, Antony Blinken says Beijing's talk of Ukraine peace 'doesn't add up'
Antony Blinken underscored strong U.S. concerns about China's support for Russia's defense industrial base in talks on Friday with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, saying Beijing's talk of peace in Ukraine «doesn't add up.» In a meeting with Wang on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, Blinken said he also raised China's «dangerous and destabilizing actions» in the South China Sea and discussed improving communication between their militaries. Blinken told a press conference he and Wang also discussed ways to disrupt the flow of drugs into the United States, and the risks posed by artificial intelligence.

Humanoid robots are the next threat from China
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Hollywood in the 1970s and ’80s often imagined a world where technology is so evolved it is almost human, from “Star Wars," in which R2-D2 and C-3PO are not just tools but also friends to humans, to “The Terminator," in which an assassin-robot is disguised as a human. Science fiction is about to become reality.

China stocks rally tested after stimulus-led gains: Markets wrap
Asian shares gained for a fifth day as a rally sparked by support measures from Beijing continued, while US stocks set fresh highs, with investors preparing for further rate cuts. Equity benchmarks rose in South Korea and Australia, while those for Japan were mixed after the yen strengthened against the dollar in the prior two sessions. The Golden Dragon index of US-listed Chinese companies rallied 9.1% in New York trading on Tuesday. The moves follow the best day since 2020 for a gauge of mainland equities after China unveiled a sweeping stimulus package to support the economy and financial markets.

Xi Jinping’s economic adrenaline shot is only buying China a little time
Pan Gongsheng unleashed one of the country’s most daring policy campaigns in decades. In what amounts to a massive adrenaline shot for an economy on the cusp of a deflationary spiral, the governor of the People’s Bank of China and other top financial officials unveiled a series of easing measures that market watchers had wanted for weeks at a rare, high-level press conference on Tuesday in Beijing. They include interest rate cuts, more cash for banks, bigger incentives to buy homes and plans to consider a stock stabilization fund. Markets on the mainland and in Hong Kong soared, with the CSI 300 Index — a benchmark of onshore Chinese stocks — posting its biggest gain since July 2020. US equity futures advanced and European stocks climbed on the back of sectors with heavy exposure to China, including manufacturers of automobiles and luxury goods.
