Virtual digital assets may get a broader definition
New Delhi: India could widen the definition of virtual digital assets to cover any new such assets that may emerge and also further refine the provision to tax these assets. The budget for FY23 announced last week proposes to tax any income from the transfer of any virtual digital asset at a flat 30% rate. The provision will be applicable from April 1, 2022. The government could fine-tune the provisions proposed in the budget to tax virtual digital assets after discussions with the industry and to account for the dynamic nature of the sector, officials told ET.

Govt to take balanced view on crypto: Sanjeev Sanyal
New Delhi: The government will take a balanced view on the issue of regulation of cryptocurrencies as they have implications on the country's financial stability, Principal Economic Adviser Sanjeev Sanyal said on Monday. Currently, there are no particular regulations or any ban on use of cryptocurrency in the country. The issue of cryptocurrency has not been covered in the Economic Survey 2021-22, Sanyal said in an interaction with media on the Survey tabled in Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier in the day. «As you know, this is a matter of some debate, both inside the government, in the Ministry of Finance, and even in Parliament. So, this is something that is currently in discussion,» he said.

India’s crypto bill likely to miss budget session of Parliament
New Delhi: The Centre is unlikely to introduce the much-awaited cryptocurrency bill in the upcoming budget session of Parliament as it wants to hold more discussions and build consensus on the regulatory framework. The government also wants to wait for the pilot launch of the Reserve Bank of India’s digital currency expected in a few months. While the Centre is keen on the bill, it is looking to hold more discussions with stakeholders to firm up a view on the policy, according to officials with knowledge of the matter. “The crypto bill may not be introduced in the budget session. It is a complex subject. This will require more time,” a senior finance ministry official told ET.
