What was the price of Titan sub search? A look at estimates
Titan submersible saw millions of dollars worth of Canadian military equipment and personnel deployed in the search, estimates suggest. The figure, calculated by Global News with data provided by the government, gives an idea of the financial value of Ottawa’s involvement in the search for the lost vessel, which suddenly imploded while on an expedition to the Titanic wreckage in June. The operation fell within the budgets of the departments involved – Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Department of National Defence (DND) – spokespeople for both told Global News. Officials say that means DND did not incur incremental, or additional, costs while Fisheries and Oceans Canada – which oversees the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) – said it does not track expenditures incurred from specific search and rescue cases.“Responding to incidents is part of our overall daily operations, and as a result it would be difficult to calculate and allocate costs on a case-by-case basis,” the fisheries spokesperson told Global News.“Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) resources respond to incidents of distress.… The goal is to save lives and CAF search and rescue services are provided free of cost to those in peril; they do not function on a cost-recovery basis,” the DND spokesperson said. But based on the resources deployed in the search, the time they were deployed and their average hourly operating costs, the total value of the recovery operation appears to be around $3,125,226 to $3,130,576.The search for Titan – a deep-sea submersible operated by American tourism and expeditions company OceanGate – captivated the world’s attention following its sudden disappearance on June 18.The U.S.

We can't live in that world with AI,» said Jen Easterly, director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

Ottawa needs to ‘watch our purse strings’ while supporting Canadians: Anand
Anita Anand says Canada is at a point where it needs to “watch our purse strings” when it comes to spending, but adds the federal government is “striking the balance” between fiscal responsibility and supporting Canadians. That approach is not just being taken with addressing cost-of-living issues like affordable housing — a key focus of last week’s fall economic statement — but also national defence, a portfolio Anand previously led and says will not be impacted by efforts to cut costs in Ottawa.“It certainly is an economic period where we need to watch our purse strings as well as to make sure we’re delivering on the priorities that are so important for our country,” she told Eric Sorensen in an interview that aired Sunday on The West Block. She called the measures introduced in Tuesday’s fiscal update “targeted” toward building more homes faster.Tuesday’s update adds $20.8 billion in new spending since the spring budget over five years, with some new measures designed to boost the housing supply, including rental units and affordable housing.

Alberta to invoke Sovereignty Act against Ottawa’s Clean Energy Regulations
Danielle Smith will be using the province’s Sovereignty Act to challenge Ottawa’s requirement to achieve a net-zero electricity grid by 2035.Smith confirmed the plan on 630 CHED’s and QR Calgary’s Your Province Your Premier on Saturday.During the radio show, Smith said the province tried to work collaboratively with the federal government to make the province’s electricity grid net zero by 2050. However, Ottawa’s target of 2035 is “unachievable” and will make electricity unaffordable for Albertans, she said.“We will not put our operators at risk of going to jail if they do not achieve the unachievable,” she said.

"India was convicted even without...": Indian envoy response to Canada on Nijjar killing probe
Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil was not fully concluded. In an interview with CTV news channel, the high commissioner was asked about the allegations raised by Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau of possible Indian government's involvement in Nijjar's killing. Responding to this, Verma said, «There are two points on that. One is that, even without the investigation being concluded, India was convicted.

‘I’m pretty much speechless’: Outrage after Toronto turns down federal shelter offer
City of Toronto two locations as temporary shelters, and operational funding for a third location but the city declined the offer late last week, Global News has learned. At its November meeting, City Council passed a motion requesting Ottawa “take urgent action to address the refugee crisis including funding and operationalizing emergency accommodation at federal sites, including federal armouries, and funding and operationalizing a regional refugee reception centre.” At that same meeting, all 25 councillors and Mayor Olivia Chow signed a letter addressed to the Ministers of National Defence and Emergency Preparedness, reiterating the requests and urgency. The latest call for aid came months after a bitter battle between the city, province, and federal government over refugee housing that led to hundreds of asylum seekers being left out in the elements during the summer.Multiple sources confirmed with Global News the federal government offered the city an option last week, which would open both the Moss Park and Fort York Armouries as shelter space until mid-December. According to one source, as part of the deal, Ottawa would also provide $5 million to the city so it could operate a shelter at the Better Living Centre on the Exhibition Place grounds for the remainder of the winter. The city reportedly declined the offer late last week.Following the fall fiscal update, Mayor Chow took aim at the federal government again for a lack of support for refugee housing.
