New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday sought clarity from the government on the legal status of Bitcoin in the country, days after the finance minister taxed crypto trading transactions at 30 per cent. The issue cropped up in a criminal case where the accused is facing charges of defrauding people in a crypto-currency scam. A bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud granted him interim protection from arrest till the next hearing but sought more clarity on the legal status of crypto currency.

Emphasising that the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) will be introduced in FY23 as announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Budget speech, Patra said India will proceed very gradually on the subject as there are concerns on privacy, its impact on monetary policy formulation and energy intensity. The government had plans to introduce a bill on cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin during the Winter Session of Parliament in November-December 2021 but did not introduce it. "RBI's view is quite known on crypto. I think it is the one of the views that has actually delayed a bill on that subject but we will engage in a fair debate on that subject and will look at all sides of the debate," Patra said, speaking at an event organised by the Pune International Centre.

The number of arrests in a Rs 40 crore cryptocurrency fraud in Nagpur in which over 2,000 investors were duped reached 11 on Sunday, a day after the main accused, his wife, and two associates were held from Lonavala in Pune, police said.
