Don’t overreact to the cancer risk of sugar-free sweeteners
There was good reason to avoid products with the artificial sweetener aspartame even before the World Health Organization classified it as a “possible carcinogen." Now diet soda drinkers might want to quit their cans. But first, some perspective: “Possible carcinogen" is the weakest of three bins into which WHO classifies anything that’s even remotely tied to cancer in any kind of study. It labels substances with more serious links to cancer as “probable carcinogens" and if the evidence is really strong, “carcinogenic to humans." That middle category includes things that many of us consume routinely, including alcoholic beverages and very hot drinks (linked to oesophageal cancer).

'Giant mirror in space': Astronomers discover most reflective exoplanet, 260 light years from Earth
most reflective planet ever observed outside of our Solar System, astronomers said on Monday. This strange world, which is more than 260 light-years from Earth, reflects 80 per cent of the light from its host star, according to new observations from Europe's exoplanet-probing Cheops space telescope. That makes it the first exoplanet comparably shiny as Venus, which is the brightest object in our night sky other than the Moon. First discovered in 2020, the Neptune-sized planet called LTT9779b orbits its star in just 19 hours. Because it is so close, the side of the planet facing its star is a sizzling 2,000 degrees Celsius, which is considered far too hot for clouds to form. Yet LTT9779b seems to have them. «It was really a puzzle,» said Vivien Parmentier, a researcher at France's Cote d'Azur Observatory and co-author of a new study in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. The researchers then «realised we should think about this cloud formation in the same way as condensation forming in a bathroom after a hot shower,» he said in a statement. Like running hot water steams up a bathroom, a scorching stream of metal and silicate — the stuff of which glass is made — oversaturated LTT9779b's atmosphere until metallic clouds formed, he said.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus: All you need to know about the virus spreading across Europe, Africa, Middle East due to climate change
CCHF) virus, which poses a significant public health risk, is spreading across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, with concerns of its potential impact being exacerbated by climate change. CCHF is primarily transmitted by ticks and carries a fatality rate ranging from 10 to 40 percent. Instances of CCHF have already been reported in Spain and Pakistan, raising concerns about the possibility of its emergence in the United Kingdom. According to James Wood, head of veterinary medicine at Cambridge University, CCHF could eventually make its way to the UK due to the presence of ticks. He noted that the disease is expanding beyond its typical regions and progressing toward countries like Britain and France, largely due to the effects of climate change. Given the urgency of the situation, the government has issued a crucial health advisory regarding CCHF, urging individuals to take preventive measures against ticks. These precautions involve wearing appropriate clothing, such as long sleeves and trousers, when in areas inhabited by ticks, as well as conducting thorough tick checks after outdoor activities.
