Growth bias continues to weigh on performance at Baillie Gifford Japan
In its final results published today (29 October), BGFD reported its net asset value total return was up 10% over the year, compared to 14.7% total returns for the TOPIX index. The latest results for the trust, which divides its portfolio among four key themes — secular growth, growth stalwarts, special situations and cyclical growth — reflect a prolonged period of underperformance over the past five years. Limiting low-cost steel imports from China will hurt MSMEs in India: EEPC
As the government considers imposing additional duties to curb the influx of cheaper steel imports, which are impacting domestic producers, the Engineering Export Promotion Council of India (EEPC India) as well as steel producer Jindal Steel have voiced their concerns about the potential effects of these protectionist measures. EEPC India, the organisation advocating for engineering goods exporters, is against limiting steel imports from cost-effective markets. According to the council, curbing steel imports from China will severely impact the engineering goods sector, especially MSMEs, which depend on competitively priced steel to sustain operations. “It is imperative to keep domestic steel prices competitive. The price differential between Chinese steel and Indian-produced steel is significant. This price advantage enables downstream industries, especially MSMEs, to remain competitive in domestic and global markets,” says Arun Kumar Garodia, Chairman of EEPC India.

Yen mired in political uncertainty; dollar looks to key data releases
yen languished near a three-month trough on Tuesday as the loss of a parliamentary majority for Japan's ruling coalition in weekend elections raised uncertainty about the nation's political and monetary outlook. Elsewhere, the dollar eased a touch, though remained not too far from its recent high ahead of major U.S. data releases later in the week that could determine the path for Federal Reserve policy.

North Korea has sent about 10,000 troops to Russia to likely fight against Ukraine, Pentagon says
North Korea has sent about 10,000 troops to Russia to train and likely fight against Ukraine within «the next several weeks,» the Pentagon said Monday, in a move that Western leaders say will intensify the almost three-year war and jolt relations in the Indo-Pacific region. Some of the North Korean soldiers have already moved closer to Ukraine, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said, and were believed to be heading for the Kursk border region, where Russia has been struggling to push back a Ukrainian incursion. Earlier Monday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte NATO confirmed recent Ukrainian intelligence reports that some North Korean military units were already in the Kursk region.

Transformer steel shortage could impact India's energy ambitions: GTRI
power sector expansion plans, think tank GTRI said on Monday. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that India's power sector is facing a 30 per cent shortage of CRGO steel, essential for electric motors and transformers. With domestic production meeting only about 10-12 per cent of demand, India relies heavily on imports, it added. It said the immediate cause of the CRGO steel shortage is import uncertainty caused by the delayed license renewals by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for many foreign suppliers from Japan, South Korea and China.
