carbon is estimated to have been accumulated and stored in long-lasting products from around the world made by humans, such as plastics and buildings, between 1995 and 2019, according to a study. Researchers at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands said this 'fossil carbon' added to the 'technosphere' — the sum of all human-made objects, both in use and discarded — equals around 93 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions from around the world in 2019. They added that the carbon locked up in the 'technosphere' has a huge potential to add to greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing the lifetime of products and recycling rates are two ways to reduce the amount of fossil carbon entering waste streams, the researchers suggested.

Constructed as environment-friendly diesel-electric vessels for the transport of general cargo in the coastal waters of Europe, these vessels have a length of 89.43 metres, 13.2 metres breadth with a draft of 4.2 metres and have been designed by Conoship International of the Netherlands, it added.

Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) said on Wednesday it fined Netflix 4.75 million euros ($4.98 million) for not properly informing customers about its use of their personal data between 2018 and 2020. The investigation, which started in 2019, showed that «Netflix did not inform customers clearly enough in its privacy statement about what exactly Netflix does with those data,» the DPA said in a statement. «Furthermore, customers did not receive sufficient information when they asked Netflix which data the company collects about them. These are violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),» the watchdog said.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows into India have crossed the USD one trillion milestone in the April 2000-September 2024 period, firmly establishing the country's reputation as a safe and key investment destination globally. According to data from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the cumulative amount of FDI, including equity, reinvested earnings and other capital, stood at USD 1,033.40 billion during the said period. About 25 per cent of the FDI came through the Mauritius route. It was followed by Singapore (24 per cent), the US (10 per cent), the Netherlands (7 per cent), Japan (6 per cent), the UK (5 per cent), UAE (3 per cent) and Cayman Islands, Germany and Cyprus accounted for 2 per cent each. India received USD 177.18 billion from Mauritius, USD 167.47 billion from Singapore and USD 67.8 billion from the US during the period under review, as per the data.
