Haryana polls: Denied ticket, BJP MLA Lakshman Napa quits party
Denied ticket for the October 5 Haryana Assembly polls, ruling BJP legislator from Ratia reserve assembly constituency Lakshman Dass Napa has quit the party. Napa, in a letter to state party chief Mohan Lal Badoli, shortly after the BJP put out the first list of 67 candidates for the polls, said he was quitting the party and resigning from its primary membership. From Ratia, the party has fielded former Sirsa MP Sunita Duggal. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Duggal had been denied re-nomination from the Sirsa parliamentary constituency after former Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar, who had joined BJP ahead of the LS polls, was given the ticket.

China to launch anti-dumping probes into Canadian canola, chemicals
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last month announced tariffs of 100 percent on Chinese EVs, accusing Beijing of «not playing by the same rules as other countries» in areas like environmental and labour standards. The United States and the European Union have also respectively slapped tariffs of 100 percent and 36 percent on Chinese EVs, arguing that Beijing unfairly subsidises domestic producers whose products then flood foreign markets and undercut local competitors.

Death toll from flood climbs to 59 in Bangladesh, over 5.4 m people affected
Bangladesh, officials announced on Saturday. The Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, while giving out updates on the flood situation, said the highest deaths were reported from Cumilla and Feni districts, both adjoining the border with Tripura in India on the northeast side, with 14 and 23 deaths respectively. Monsoon rainfall-triggered floods in deltaic Bangladesh and upstream Indian regions have wreaked havoc in the country for about two weeks resulting in deaths and displacement of humans and cattle, and loss of property posing a huge administrative challenge to the newly installed interim government amid a political transition. Bangladesh is crisscrossed by more than 200 rivers, 54 of them being trans-boundary rivers with upper riparian India, in four major basins. A depression (a system that brings in copious rainfall) in the Bay of Bengal last week had led to the current deluge with rivers in two basins — the north-eastern Meghna Basin and south-western Chattrogram Hills Basin — witnessing widespread flooding.

One man’s fight with Michigan over quest for the oldest Great Lakes shipwreck
SUMMER ISLAND, Mich.—Steve Libert steered his finicky pontoon boat and aging crew of scuba divers to a spot offshore this uninhabited island in northern Lake Michigan, lined up with a dead cedar tree and dropped anchor. Eight feet beneath the clear, green water sat the skeletal wreck of the first full-size European ship to sail—and sink—in the Upper Great Lakes, in 1679: French explorer Robert La Salle’s Le Griffon. Or maybe not.

The Watchers: When and where to watch Shyamalan’s film on streaming
Shyamalan in 2024, has now made its way to streaming platforms, following a mixed reception in theaters. Produced by her father, the renowned filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, The Watchers marks Ishana's directorial debut. The film, based on A.M. Shine's novel, stars Dakota Fanning as Mina, a 28-year-old artist who is trapped in a forest in Ireland alongside three strangers and faces mysterious nocturnal creatures. Premiering in theaters on June 7, The Watchers garnered $33 million against its $30 million budget, a modest figure that reflects the film's lukewarm reception, as mentioned in a report by Screenrant. Unlike M. Night Shyamalan's other 2024 release, Trap, which performed more robustly at the box office, The Watchers did not capture a broad audience, leading to its quick transition to streaming. As the film begins to find a new audience online, its impact on Ishana Night Shyamalan's budding career remains to be seen.

Harris vows tougher approach on migration, supports weapons for Israel
Kamala Harris vowed a tougher approach to migration along the U.S. southern border and said she would not withhold weapons to Israel, in her first interview with a major news organization since becoming the Democratic nominee for president. Harris' interview with CNN anchor Dana Bash reflected an effort to show she is in command of the issues and give Americans a sense of her policy positions with little more than two months until Election Day on Nov. 5. Harris said she would renew a push for comprehensive border legislation that would tighten migration into the United States and vowed to «enforce our laws» against border crossings.

Did cheetah introduction increase revenue like Mumbai penguin project? Aaditya Thackeray
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Sunday wondered whether the introduction of cheetahs at Kuno Park in Madhya Pradesh translated into the generation of revenue, claiming penguins in the Mumbai zoo boosted the income of the civic body. «One should find out how much revenue generated after cheetahs were translocated to India (in Kuno Park in Madhya Pradesh),» Thackeray told reporters. The former state minister claimed the introduction of penguins in the civic-run Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan contributed to increased earnings for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
