'2023 among warmest in at least 100k years'
Averaged across last year, temperatures worldwide were 1.48C, higher than they were in the second half of the 19th century, the European Union climate monitor announced Tuesday. That is warmer by a sizable margin than 2016, the previous hottest year. To climate scientists, it comes as no surprise that unabated emissions of greenhouse gases caused global warming to reach new highs.

Oil traders are flocking to sanctions-free Venezuela
gold sourced from illegal mines. The architect of much of the sanctions-busting was a former oil minister, Tareck El Aissami. Once the golden boy of the regime, he has not been heard of since March, when he said on social media that he supported a corruption inquiry which revealed that PDVSA had not been paid for more than 80% of the oil it had shipped, to the tune of $21bn.

Oil down more than 1% as Saudi price cuts offset Mid-East worries
Brent crude slipped 0.93%, or 73 cents, to $78.03 a barrel by 0753 GMT after falling more than 1% earlier in the session, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures shed 1.04%, or 77 cents, to $73.04 a barrel. «Saudi Aramco slashing its February OSPs bolsters the weak demand narrative,» said Vandana Hari, founder of oil market analysis provider Vanda Insights. Rising supply and competition with rival producers prompted Saudi Arabia on Sunday to cut the February official selling price (OSP) of its flagship Arab Light crude to Asia to the lowest level in 27 months. «If we were just to focus on the fundamentals including, higher inventories, higher OPEC/non-OPEC production, and a lower-than-expected Saudi OSP, it would be impossible to be anything other than bearish crude oil,» IG analyst Tony Sycamore said. «However, that doesn't take into account the fact that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are undeniably rising again which will mean limited downside.» Both contracts climbed more than 2% in the first week of 2024 after investors returned from holidays to focus on geopolitical risk in the Middle East following attacks by Yemeni Houthis on ships in the Red Sea. Oil steadies as Middle East supply worries balance economy concerns
Oil steadied on Thursday, largely unwinding an earlier rally, as concerns over Middle Eastern supply and disruptions at an oilfield in Libya were countered by concern about economic growth and demand. Local protests forced a production shutdown on Wednesday at Libya's Sharara oilfield, which can produce up to 300,000 barrels per day (bpd). The field, one of Libya's largest, has been a frequent target for political protests. Brent crude fell 30 cents, or 0.4%, to $77.95 a barrel by 1450 GMT, after earlier rising over $1.
