Global cooperation declining after resilience through 2012-2020: WEF study
global cooperation has started to decline after 2020 due to weakened cooperation in peace and security as well as health and wellness, a new study showed on Monday. Launching a Global Cooperation Barometer, the World Economic Forum said cooperation is possible even in the midst of competition and there are signs of strength, particularly in cooperation on climate and natural capital, trade and capital flows, and innovation and technology. «The barometer indicates that global cooperation was resilient in multiple dimensions from 2012 until 2020 but overall cooperation declined by 2 per cent from 2020 to 2022,» the WEF said in the report released days before its annual meeting of world leaders in the Swiss ski resort town Davos.

Encore ARC acquires IndoStar Capital's distressed loan book of Rs 292 crore
IndoStar Capital Finance sold Rs 292 crore stressed asset portfolio to Encore Asset Reconstruction Company in a deal which involved a senior-junior structure between the buyer and the seller, said people with knowledge of the matter. The senior-junior structure is rarely used between an ARC and a seller (banks or finance companies), with regulators discouraging such structures in AIF transactions. Encore ARC had given a binding offer of Rs 271 crore to IndoStar Capital’s Rs 292 crore loan portfolio in the form of a senior junior structure. The offer by Encore ARC triggered a Swiss Challenge auction. Mid of December, IndoStar had invited counteroffers — under senior-junior structure — from other ARCs.

Mint Explainer: What WEF 2024 hopes to achieve
It’s that time of the year when several heads of state, the richest and most powerful businessmen, civil society and the media head to the snowclad resort town of Davos in the Swiss Alps for a five-day pilgrimage to brainstorm and shape the global agenda. The 54th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum starting on 15 January is being held against the backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia amid the continuing Israel-Hamas war, new shocks to supply chains, growing threats from climate change, and emerging risks from the increasing application of artificial intelligence. As always, more than 100 governments, including heads of state, will attend the meeting, which is being convened under the theme ‘Rebuilding Trust’.

Finland increases financial requirement for Schengen visa applicants
Finland will have to show more funds in thei bank accouts to be eligible for a Schengen visa. Effective from the new year, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Finland has implemented new regulations impacting short-stay travelers requiring Schengen visas. Travelers will now have to show a minimum of 50 euros for each day spent in Finland, marking an increase of 20 euros from the previous requirement. This 66% hike comes in response to escalating living costs, the ministry said. A Schengen visa serves as an entry permit for short-term or temporary visits, granting individuals access to travel within the Schengen area, encompassing multiple European countries. Along with the increased financial requirement, Finland has introduced a new proof of sponsorship or accommodation scheme. This initiative allows visa applicants to use the financial resources of their hosts in Finland to meet the stipulated funds requirement. Under this arrangement, hosts are required to complete the sponsorship form, which the visa applicant must include along with the rest of the application. This provision aims to enhance the transparency and accountability of financial arrangements for those seeking short-term stays in Finland.
