export controls to stop China from acquiring advanced computer chips and manufacturing equipment that could be used to boost its military, US commerce secretary Gina Raimondo said Monday. «Technology is changing faster than ever, which means we have to wake up every day and ask ourselves, 'are we doing enough?' My job is to protect the American people and to make sure there are no sophisticated technology that we have, that China doesn't have, that they can't access it and use it to enable the Chinese military,» Raimondo said. An effort to get aid to Gaza by sea is moving ahead. But the first ship is still waiting in Cyprus
US Army vessel carrying equipment for building a temporary pier in Gaza was on its way to the Mediterranean on Sunday, three days after US President Joe Biden announced plans to increase aid deliveries by sea to the besieged enclave where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are going hungry. The new push for aid came in the final hours before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which could start as early as Sunday evening, depending on the sighting of a crescent moon. Hopes for a new cease-fire by Ramadan faded days ago with negotiations apparently stalled. The opening of the sea corridor, along with airdrops by the US, Jordan and others, showed growing alarm over Gaza's deadly humanitarian crisis and a new willingness to bypass Israeli control over land shipments. Israel said that it welcomed the sea deliveries and would inspect Gaza-bound cargo before it leaves a staging area in nearby Cyprus.

Why it's hard to explain Joe Biden's unpopularity
Joe Biden is one of the most unpopular presidents in modern American history. In Gallup polling, his approval ratings are lower than those of any president embarking on a reelection campaign, from Dwight Eisenhower to Donald Trump. Yet an air of mystery hangs around his lousy polling numbers. As The Washington Free Beacon's Joe Simonson noted recently, just surfing around most U.S. media and pop culture, you probably wouldn't realize that Biden's job approval ratings are quite so historically terrible, worse by far than Trump's at the same point in his first term.

Led by Elon Musk, Silicon Valley inches to the right
Elon Musk has made an unabashed turn to the right politically, defying the orthodoxy that Silicon Valley is a citadel of well-heeled liberals beholden to Democrats. Long considered non-identifiable ideologically, Musk's politics are now hardline right wing as he uses his platform (now called X) to stoke the themes cherished by Fox News, conservative talk radio and far right movements across the West.
