"Not looking to provoke India, want answers": Canada PM Trudeau urges India to take Nijjar's killing seriously
Justin Trudeau on Tuesday said that Canada is not looking to provoke India as he urged the Indian government to take killing of separatist Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar seriously. The Canadian government on September 19 expelled a top Indian diplomat and accused India of having links to the killing of Khalistani separatist Nijjar. However, India refused such claims and called the move «absurd and motivated.» India also expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat action after Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over the case, marking fresh tensions to the already frayed bilateral ties. Canadian High Commissioner to India Cameron MacKay was summoned and he was informed about the decision to expel the senior diplomat with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) saying the move reflects New Delhi's growing concern at the «interference of Canadian diplomats in our internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities». In a strongly-worded statement, the MEA also trashed comments by Trudeau and Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, asserting that «such unsubstantiated allegations seek to shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists, who have been provided shelter in Canada and continue to threaten India's sovereignty and territorial integrity». Though New Delhi did not divulge the name of the Canadian diplomat who has been asked to leave India within five days, people familiar with the matter said it is Canadian intelligence agency's station chief in New Delhi Olivier Sylvestere. The Indian action to expel the Canadian diplomat came hours after Joly announced that a «top Indian diplomat» has been expelled from Canada.

From friends to foes: How Canada became India's 'enemy'
Canada and India has encountered a series of challenges that have raised concerns on both sides. In geopolitics and diplomacy, the K term has long been linked with Kashmir for India, but now another K — Khalistan — has arisen as very problematic, severing ties between India and Canada. A series of disturbing incidents have put a strain on what was once considered a relatively stable diplomatic relationship between the two nations, with a bilateral commercial relationship valued at a substantial $100 billion. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of participation in the killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in a statement vehemently condemned by New Delhi.

India-Canada ties all time low: Delhi’s reaction awaited following Trudeau’s allegations
Trudeau on Tuesday stating in his country’s parliament that the security agencies were investigating a link between the “agents” Indian government and the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar earlier this year. Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said that a top Indian diplomat posted in the country has been expelled based on the “investigations” in what would be the first such action against an Indian diplomat posted in the West. The Indian government is expected to react strongly during the course of the day on these developments. «Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar,» Trudeau said while speaking at the House of Commons in Ottawa on Tuesday. "Canada has declared its deep concerns to the top intelligence security officials of the Indian government. Last week, at the G20, I brought them personally and directly to Prime Minister Modi in no uncertain terms," the Canadian Prime Minister said. Trudeau urged the Indian government to «cooperate with Canada to get to the bottom of this matter» and reiterate its position on «extra-judicial operations» in another country. «If proven true, this would be a great violation of our sovereignty and of the most basic rule of how countries deal with each other,» Joly said.

Canada expels Indian diplomat as it investigates India's possible link to Sikh activist's slaying
Canada expelled a top Indian diplomat Monday as it investigates what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called credible allegations that India's government may have had links to the assassination in Canada of a Sikh activist.Trudeau said in Parliament that Canadian intelligence agencies have been looking into the allegations after Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a strong supporter of an independent Sikh homeland known as Khalistan, was gunned down on June 18 outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey, British Columbia. Trudeau told Parliament that he brought up the slaying with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G-20 last week. He said he told Modi that any Indian government involvement would be unacceptable and that he asked for cooperation in the investigation. Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said the head of Indian intelligence in Canada has been expelled as a consequence. «If proven true this would be a great violation of our sovereignty and of the most basic rule of how countries deal with each other,» Joly said.

Canada has ‘game plan’ if U.S. takes authoritarian shift after 2024 election: Joly
Melanie Joly says Canada has been considering a “game plan” for how it would respond if the United States takes a far-right, authoritarian shift after next year’s presidential elections.“We are certainly working on scenarios,” Joly said in French during an interview with a Montreal radio station Wednesday.Joly added that Ottawa’s close political and economic ties to the U.S. means that “we must certainly prepare several scenarios.”She suggested Canada has a game plan in mind but wouldn’t get into details.“In general, there is our game plan, precisely to be able to manage what could be a rather difficult situation,” she said.“I will work with my colleagues and with the mayors, the provincial premiers, with the business community, with the unions, with everyone in the country, so that we are ready regardless of the election outcome.”Joly drew an analogy to her government’s experience working with the administration of former U.S.

Diane Francis: Trudeau's cabinet shuffle is about politics, not governance
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has degraded Canada’s standing in the world since he took office in 2015. A cabinet shuffle won’t change this fact — not only because Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly remains in her post, but because there is a fundamental lack of understanding of geopolitics and economics among the Liberal ranks.
