Microsoft will take a non-voting, observer position on OpenAI's board, the ChatGPT owner's newly reinstated CEO Sam Altman said on Wednesday. Microsoft, one of the artificial intelligence startup's main backers, was not immediately available for comment.

OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman has officially returned as CEO of the AI startup after a tumultuous last week or so, which saw the 38-year-old fired and then announced he was being rehired. In addition, Greg Brockman is returning to his position as president of OpenAI, while Mira Murati, who was briefly appointed interim CEO of OpenAI following Altman's ouster, will now return to her role as the company's CTO.

OpenAI, the firm behind the success of ChatGPT, approached Dario Amodei, the chief executive officer of rival Anthropic, offering him to replace its ousted CEO Sam Altman, reports said on November 21. Apart from offering him the top role, the board of directors also sought to discuss a potential merger between the two artificial intelligence (AI)-focussed startups, Reuters reported, citing sources who are privy to the development. Amodei declined both the offers, the sources further told the news agency.

OpenAI on November 17 announced that co-founder and CEO Sam Altman has been dismissed for inconsistencies in communication with the company's board. In a statement on its website, the board said it "no longer has confidence" in Altman's ability to lead OpenAI. OpenAI is the start-up that has produced the generative artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT.

OpenAI's ongoing operations and its partnership with Microsoft. Amid significant leadership transitions, Altman's tweets reflect an undeterred focus on the organisation's mission and its collaboration with the tech giant. In one of the tweets, Altman underscored the shared priority between himself and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to ensure the flourishing future of OpenAI.

Brockman, who was also a board member, quit in protest hours after Altman’s departure.

Altman was unceremoniously ousted as the company's CEO in a Google Meet on Thursday night, while Greg Brockman was also removed from his position as chairman of the board. OpenAI executives and investors to reinstate Sam Altman to his role as chief executive officer reached an impasse over the makeup and role of the board, according to people familiar with the negotiations. Resolution could come quickly, though talks are fluid and ongoing. Altman, who was fired Friday, is open to returning but wants to see governance changes, including the removal of existing board members, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations are private. He’s also seeking a statement absolving him of wrongdoing, they said. After facing intense outrage over the ouster, the board initially agreed in principle to step down, but have so far refused to officially do so. The directors have been vetting candidates for new directors.
