NEW DELHI : Mercedes-Benz India Pvt. Ltd, the country’s largest luxury carmaker, will follow a top-down strategy with its electric vehicles (EVs) in alignment with its global plan to exit the “volume segment" play, and hopes to benefit from the fact that its rivals are launching EVs in more affordable price brackets, competing with mass-market players, a top company executive said.

Mercedes Benz’s research & development (R&D) network, contributing to not only software development but also to electronics and hardware, said Markus Schäfer, chief technology officer of the German luxury carmaker. Mercedes Benz’s first operating system, MB.OS, which will be ready for production in 2024, has been conceived mainly at the company’s 9,000-member R&D centre in Bengaluru. The company’s CEO, Ola Kallenius, said that the luxury carmaker will launch its Concept CLA, showcased at the IAA Munich Motor Show, in 2025, the same year as its European debut.

India has been a “tremendous success” for Mercedes-Benz in the last few years and the company is revving up to invest in infrastructure and drive in the “right products” to participate in the growth story of the country, Ola Kallenius, chairman of the board of management at Mercedes Benz AG, told ET. Kallenius, who visited India earlier this year to review operations and meet policymakers and industry leaders, said: “We had a very constructive meeting (in India). And you get a sense in India, it's like the 21st century belongs to India.

Porsche AG's executive board member for sales and marketing Detlev von Platen and vice-president of region overseas and emerging markets Matthias Becker will be in India later this month, while senior executives from BMW's headquarters are scheduled to fly in during the festive season in October. Ola Kallenius, chairman of the board of management at Mercedes-Benz AG, Andre Konsbruck, VP for overseas sales at Audi AG; Nick Connor, head of Volvo Cars in Asia Pacific; and Francesco Scardaoni, region director, Automobili Lamborghini Asia Pacific, have already visited the country in the past few months.These are among about a dozen top executives of luxury-vehicle companies who have already visited India or will be here soon to review their growth strategies for this market.
