Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum dies in road accident
marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach were killed in a traffic accident in the Rift Valley on Sunday, cutting short the promising career of the only man to have run the endurance classic in less than two hours and one minute. The 24-year-old set the world record at the Chicago Marathon in October with a time of two hours and 35 seconds to surpass the mark of 2:01:09 run by compatriot Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin in 2022. Kiptum, who clocked three of the seven fastest marathon times in history, had been hoping to become the first man to run the marathon in under two hours in race conditions at Rotterdam in April as well as make his Olympic debut in Paris in July.

Kirsty Coventry became the first woman and African to be elected president of the International Olympic Committee on Thursday, declaring it to be an «extraordinary moment». The Zimbabwean Sports Minister succeeds Thomas Bach, who steps down after 12 years, and said she would work with the six other heavyweight rivals she beat. «This is an extraordinary moment. As a nine-year-old girl I never thought that I would be standing up here one day, getting to give back to this incredible movement of ours,» Coventry said. «This is not just a huge honour but it is a reminder to every single one of you that I will lead this organisation with so much pride, with the values at the core.

Olympics boss Thomas Bach distances himself from athletics prize money move
International Olympic Committee (IOC) distanced himself from a taboo-busting move from World Athletics' governing body to offer prize money to gold medallists at this year's Paris Olympics. World Athletics president Sebastian Coe's announcement earlier this month that track and field winners at the Paris Games will receive $50,000 (47,000 euros) has sparked mixed reactions. No other sports federation pays prize money at the Olympics.
