Coal India Ltd (CIL) has to ramp up production to higher levels in the future, Coal minister G Kishan Reddy said, as the state-owned behemoth entered its 50th year. CIL accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic coal output. Coal is yet to peak to its full potential in the country, Reddy said, urging CIL to increase production to even higher levels, as per a statement by the coal ministry. Production through domestic sources is important to avoid expensive imports, Reddy said, adding that Coal India has to ramp up production to higher levels in the future.

Paradip Port will develop three new berths, mechanise four existing ones, and establish one berth solely for green hydrogen as part of its strategy to become fully mechanised by 2030, according to officials. The central government-run port aims to exceed 400 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) handling capacity, up from 289 MTPA at present, by 2030 and to 500 MTPA by 2047. «The mechanisation of berths will require an investment of over Rs 2,500 crore and will enhance operational efficiency, reduce handling times,» a senior official told ET on condition of anonymity, adding that this will improve overall productivity at the port.

India reported a 5.5% growth in iron-ore output at 135 million tonnes (MT) for the first half of the current financial year 2024-25. The country produced 128 MT iron-ore in the same months of the previous fiscal. Manganese ore production also rose by 6.2% to 1.7 MMT in fiscal 2024-25 from 1.6 MMT during the corresponding period of previous year. India also reported higher coal output during October 2024. Among non-ferrous metals, primary aluminium production in the months under review rose 1.2% over the corresponding period last year, increasing to 20.90 lakh ton (LT) during fiscal 2024-25. Refined copper production grew by 4.6% from 2.39 LT to 2.50 LT. Adani Power Jharkhand Limited (APJL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Power, has stopped half of its power supply to Bangladesh because of outstanding bills of USD 846 million, according to a local media report on Friday. Data from Power Grid Bangladesh PLC showed the Adani plant reduced supply on Thursday night, The Daily Star newspaper said. Bangladesh reported a shortfall of more than 1,600 megawatts (MW) on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday as the 1,496 MW plant is now producing 700 MW from a single unit, the newspaper reported. Earlier, the Adani company wrote to the power secretary asking the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) to clear its outstanding dues by October 30.

While petrol sales were up mostly due to an increase in use of personal vehicles as the festive season kicked in, diesel demand dropped due to lower demand from the agriculture sector owing to the extended rainy season.

Eicher Motors Ltd on Friday said its arm VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd posted a 5 per cent decline in total sales to 7,112 units in October 2024. VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), a joint venture of the Volvo Group and Eicher Motors, had sold 7,486 units in October 2023, Eicher Motors said in a regulatory filing. October 2024 sales included 6,911 units of the Eicher brand and 201 units of the Volvo brand, it added. In the domestic commercial vehicles market, Eicher branded trucks and buses recorded sales of 6,611 units last month compared to 7,077 units in October 2023, down 6.6 per cent.

European Commission has approved the creation of a joint venture, Star India, by Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), The Walt Disney Co. (TWDC), and BTS Investment 1, the latter owned by James Murdoch and Uday Shankar. The commission concluded that the transaction would not raise competition concerns, given the joint venture's negligible activities within the European Economic Area and the limited combined market share of the involved companies. Kerala government on Thursday announced the 2024 Kerala Awards, the highest civilian awards instituted by the state government on the model of the Padma Awards, whose eight recipients include eminent writer M K Sanoo, ISRO chairman S Somanath and cricketer Sanju Samson. Established in 2021, the awards are categorised into three groups — Kerala Jyothi, Kerala Prabha, and Kerala Shree — and announced every year in the wake of 'Keralappiravi', the state's formation day that falls on November 1. Sanoo will receive the Kerala Jyothi for his contributions to literature, while Somanath and Bhuvaneshwari will be honored with the Kerala Prabha for their accomplishments in the fields of Science and Engineering and Agriculture, respectively, according to a state government release. Lending to the services sector slowed to 15.2 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) in September 2024 from 21.6 percent a year ago, primarily due to lower growth in credit to ‘non-banking financial companies’, the RBI said. Retail loan growth moderated to 16.4 percent (y-o-y) in September 2024 as compared with 18.2 percent a year ago, largely due to decline in growth in ‘other personal loans’, ‘vehicle loans’ and ‘credit card outstanding, the central bank said. However, ‘housing’ – the largest constituent of this segment – recorded accelerated growth.
