What climate change looks like in the Arctic
The history of exploration in the Arctic by European and North American expeditions is littered with gruesome ways to die. The challenges of navigating the merciless landscape are many, which is why the first humans to travel over the surface of the frozen Arctic Ocean to reach the North Pole, the geographical top of the world, arrived as late as 1969—the same year astronauts made it to the surface of the moon. It is no longer possible to travel from land across Arctic Ocean pack ice to the North Pole as they did in 1969.

Some officials of Budaun working at BJP leaders' behest, alleges SP candidate Shivpal Yadav
Samajwadi Party general secretary and party nominee from Budaun Lok Sabha seat, Shivpal Singh Yadav, on Wednesday alleged that some officials of the district are working at the behest of the BJP leaders. He accused these officials of threatening the village heads, block development committee (BDC) members and others to work for the ruling party and said he has complained about it to District Magistrate (DM) Manoj Kumar. If the DM does not take action in this connection, we will complain about this to the Election Commission, he said. To a question on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that the union of two boys is a flop show, Yadav said the two boys he is referring to are leaders, not artists.

BJP banking on ex-IPS officer Debasish Dhar to halt TMC's juggernaut in West Bengal's Birbhum
BJP has sprung a surprise in West Bengal's Birbhum constituency, pitting former IPS officer Debasish Dhar, who was suspended by the Mamata Banerjee government after the 2021 assembly elections, in a bid to halt TMC's Satabdi Roy from winning a fourth consecutive term. The absence of TMC's former Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal, whose strong-arm tactics and controversial comments lent both fear and colour to the political scene here, seems to have made the electoral atmosphere a little lacklustre, but the BJP is seeing a level-playing field, owing to the new scenario. Mondal was arrested by the CBI in 2022 in a money laundering case related to cattle smuggling in West Bengal. He is at present lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail. A political novice, Dhar has been entrusted with the onerous task of putting brakes on the actor-politician from emerging triumphant again in Birbhum in the western part of the state.

How a rare $14 billion Japanese takeover deal got caught in US politics
Nippon Steel Corp. executive sat the one man who now appeared to have the fate of the $14 billion deal in his hands: David McCall, head of the United Steelworkers union. The Japanese bid to take over United States Steel Corp. had widely been viewed as a slam-dunk offer — the only sticking point was winning over the union and, in turn, its political leverage. Mori assured McCall that Nippon Steel would offer commitments to invest more than $1 billion in the iconic American company while also promising no idling of plants and, most importantly to its workers, no immediate layoffs.

Joe Biden plans to cancel student loan debt, 23 million Americans may be impacted
Biden announced on Monday plans to ease student debt that would benefit at least 23 million Americans, addressing a key issue for young voters whose support he needs as he seeks re-election in November. The plans, which the Democratic president detailed in Madison, Wisconsin, include cancelling up to $20,000 of accrued and capitalized interest for borrowers, regardless of income, which Biden's administration estimates would eliminate the entirety of that interest for 23 million borrowers.
