For the new generation, 'auspicious' is a year-round period
young Indians increasingly choose to disregard traditional religious practices connected to Shradh, Shravan or Navratri such as not buying high-ticket items, abstaining from consuming liquor and non-vegetarian food. Amazon and Flipkart launched their biggest festive season discounting sales during Shradh despite the inauspicious nature of the period. Brands and sellers across categories like electronics and smartphones, fashion, FMCG and general merchandise have reported 20-30% growth in sales over last year's same sale period. For instance, there has been record sales of TVs due to the cricket World Cup, as well as smartphones, which has boosted overall e-commerce business by 20-25% during Shradh.

Women priest and Durga Puja: What better way to invoke woman power?
Durga Puja in full swing, there is a nip in the early morning and evening air, the perfume of Parijat wafting in the breeze, the sound of 'dhaak' drums in my neighbourhood in south Delhi and many-splendoured pandals humming with people and merriment. In the midst of the hubbub, a friend's family puja has an intriguing new feature: women purohits to conduct the rituals and women dhaakis (drummers) to set the rhythms for the invocations and the celebrations. For the past few years, the introduction of women priests at Durga Pujas have been something of a novelty.

Warner and Marsh hit centuries to help give Australia 62-run win over Pakistan at Cricket World Cup
David Warner and Mitchell Marsh powered Australia to a 62-run victory over Pakistan with their entertaining centuries Friday in the fourth game for both teams at the Cricket World Cup. Pakistan paid heavily for dropping Warner on 10 as the left-hander blazed his way to 163 off 124 balls and Marsh celebrated his 32nd birthday with a career-best 121 off 108 balls in Australia’s imposing total of 367-9. Pakistan, which won the toss and elected to field, came back strongly in the last 10 overs with Shaheen Afridi picking 5-54 and Haris Rauf, who was smacked for 24 in his first over by Warner and Marsh, taking 3-83. But the damage done by Warner and Marsh was more than enough to give Australia enough runs on board. Australia kept coming hard at Pakistan once claiming the wickets of both openers Imam-ul-Haq (70) and Abdullah Shafique (64) before it got Babar Azam's team bowled out for 305 with more than four overs to spare. “Pretty tough playing here, but good to get a win,” Australia captain Pat Cummins said.

3 Ways Tomorrow’s AI Will Differ From Today’s Chatbots
After interviewing the makers of ChatGPT earlier this week, I’m left pondering: How exactly would I explain my job to an ancient hunter-gatherer? I’m thinking: “I put words and pictures into a machine that makes a clickety-clack sound and then those words and pictures can be seen by others with clickety-clack machines." How would you explain your job? During my interview with OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman and Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati at WSJ Tech Live—which you can watch above or here—Altman said AI will change work faster than other major technological revolutions did. And jobs will change so much they could be unrecognizable to those of us employed today. My columns are typically focused on tech’s here-and-now, but this conversation was about AI’s rapid evolution in the coming years.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Christmas plans may bring bad news to King Charles
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, believes that the couple can miss traditional Christmas celebrations, which could mean King Charles can not have a traditional family get-together. «Christmas is coming, and we want Meghan and Harry to inject the Windsor brand with a bit of transatlantic tension,» Dunlop commented to the Mirror. Dunlop further added, «Far from buying a penthouse near London, it doesn't even look like King Charles will get a Christmas cuddle with those absent grandchildren,» referring to Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, the couple's children. With no official residence in the UK after being served an eviction notice from their former royal residence, Frogmore Cottage, Harry and Meghan face the need to establish a new home in the country.

Retired Australian architect reminisces 50 years of devotion to Sydney's Opera House
SYDNEY, — Immediately recognisable by its sails glistening over the waters of Sydney Harbour, the UNESCO-listed Sydney Opera House is one of the world's most photographed buildings. Officially opened in 1973 and celebrating its 50th anniversary on Friday, 'The House' as it's affectionately known, has wowed generations of audiences with world-class performances inside one of the greatest architectural structures of the 20th century. Former architect and now part-time tour guide Peter Sekules' appreciation for the Sydney Opera House started as a five-year-old when his parents first took him to see the shiny white sails under construction, inspiring a life-long love of architecture. «I remember this unusual shaped building coming out of the peninsula...because a lot of the buildings and houses I was living in were all squares and rectangles and then there was this very funny shape of a building,» Sekules told Reuters from inside the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. As part of the 1956 Opera House international design competition, 233 designs were submitted by architects from around the world with Jorn Utzon from Denmark chosen as the winner. Construction began in 1959 with the project meant to take four years to complete, but after Utzon resigned due to a change in government, design differences and a blow out in costs, the structure took 14 years to complete. «When I read some of his inspirations for the Opera House, he said he really wanted to make it a contrast to all the squares and rectangles which I was brought up with and to really make this as a piece of sculpture,» Sekules said.
