HSBC’s new CEO, Georges Elhedery, has only been in charge for two months. And like all good new CEOs, he’s dabbled in a bit of wide-sweeping reform – but one of those reforms might have broader consequences for the bank’s employees than they realize.

Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu sounds alarm over alcohol addiction in rural India, calls for 'mass movement'
Sridhar Vembu, CEO of Zoho, recently took to social media to highlight the devastating impact of alcohol addiction on families in rural India, particularly in the southern regions. Through a video post, Vembu shared the story of a sanitation worker in Tenkasi who is struggling to support her family while grappling with the consequences of her sons' alcohol addiction. Her plight, Vembu noted, is representative of the many women he encounters during his travels across rural areas. These women, often the primary breadwinners, are burdened with the stress of sustaining their families in the face of addiction and neglect. Vembu emphasized the need for a mass movement to address alcohol abuse, warning that many women are at a breaking point. «We need a mass movement against alcohol — these women are reaching a breaking point,» he said in a post.

Phoenix Springs: A philosophical journey with clicks of a mouse
John Gray makes a bracing assertion in his book «Straw Dogs»: «Technology is not something that humankind can control. It is an event that has befallen the world. Once a technology enters human life-whether it be fire, the wheel, the automobile, radio, television or the internet-it changes it in ways we can never fully understand.» It's an observation brought to mind by the new point-and-click computer game Phoenix Springs, an eye-catching, thought-provoking exploration of the unintended consequences that follow a society-wide embrace of biohacking. Players fall into the role of Iris, a veteran reporter, as she sits on a train with a desert looming through a window. The opening seconds, and an arresting dissolve from the sun-flooded train to a shadowy apartment, sets the tone for what follows-a slippery exploration of memory, time and space grounded in Iris' quest to uncover the mystery of what happened to her brother.

Moment of reckoning for TD fails to lift cloud of uncertainty, analysts say
The US$3.1-billion fine levied against Toronto-Dominion Bank by U.S. authorities this week came as no surprise to those who have followed the bank’s anti-money-laundering troubles. But a decision to cap the Canadian lender’s growth south of the border came as a shock, one that analysts say will ensure the scandal’s shadow lingers over the bank, clouding its long-term outlook.

Retail money is driving quiet exits for seasoned investors
NEW DELHI: In recent years, retail investors have emerged as a formidable force in India’s equity markets, driven primarily by the growth of mutual fund investments through systematic investment plans (SIPs). However, this influx of «uninformed» retail money is inadvertently creating exit opportunities for seasoned «smart money» investors—such as promoters, private equity funds, and multinational corporations (MNCs). While these sophisticated investors capitalize on elevated valuations, they are taking money home, raising concerns about unintended consequences. Could retail money be inflating market valuations to unsustainable levels and crowding out foreign portfolio investments (FPIs)?

In Agatha All Along, the spell remains intact, placing Agatha in a world reminiscent of a mystery drama, much like Mare of Easttown. As the series progresses, viewers eagerly await the release of Agatha All Along Episode 6.

Neha Dixit's book exposes the brutal underbelly of India’s ‘informal economy’
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. One of the consequences of reading The Many Lives of Syeda X is that referring to what is called “the informal economy" in India will always henceforth seem a willful denial of reality. That part of the economy in Neha Dixit’s telling of many of the 50 jobs that her protagonist Syeda has worked at over a few decades is better described as a Dickensian brutalisation of a vulnerable workforce.

New deadline for submitting tax audit report is approaching; File it else be ready to pay Rs 1.5 lakh or 0.5% of sales as penalty
tax audit deadline is on October 7, 2024, for FY 2023-24 (AY 2024-25). However, this deadline is an extended deadline, which means if you were pinning your hopes on the extended deadline, don't. The original deadline for submitting income tax audit report on the e-filing ITR portal was September 30, 2024. The government is unlikely to extend the deadline again. «In response to a representation made by „Associated Chamber of Commerce & Industries“ #Udhampur, a request was made to the Hon'ble Finance Minister for extension of the date for filing of Audit Report for Assessment Year 2024-25. Thank you Smt Nirmala Sitharaman ji @nsitharaman for conceding the request and issuing the orders accordingly,» said Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on X (formerly Twitter).

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq calls for realistic dialogue on Kashmir resolution with BJP government
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday urged the BJP-led central government to be realistic and restart the dialogue process for the resolution of Kashmir issue and follow the path set by former prime ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh. The authorities allowed Mirwaiz to address Friday congregation at historic Jama Masjid after a month-long house arrest for which he has approached J&K High Court as well. The court on Friday directed senior additional advocate general to file response as to whether the petitioner has been put under undeclared house arrest. The case will now be heard in November. «BJP govt should take a realistic approach and accept that we have to resolve this (Kashmir) issue. A precedent in this regard is available with us, like when we spoke with Atalji, Advaniji and Manmohan Singhji, to look for options and a way forward. We need to revisit the same policy if the government wants to resolve this issue,» said Mirwaiz during the Friday congregation. Mirwaiz said that Hurriyat as an organisation may be in disarray after 2019 as several people were arrested and summoned, but it still represents sentiments and emotions of the people of J&K. He said that as long as a part of J&K is in India, a part in Pakistan and some parts in China, especially after 2019, the future of the region is uncertain.
