COST UPS Sustainability wellness travelers Nikhil Kamath buys shoes online. After delivery, Zerodha founder thinks about India's GDP, wages, and offline vs online
Nikhil Kamath shared his thoughts on the growing focus on delivery speed and sustainability as India's GDP per capita and wages increase. He questioned whether delivery wages would remain viable if GDP per capita reached $5,000. Reflecting on consumer behavior, he recounted buying a pair of expensive shoes via quick commerce while traveling. The shoes didn’t fit well, making him regret the purchase. He wondered if there was a limit to average order value and how many consumers in India would forgo in-store experiences for high-value goods. He believes, “Commodity is different from brand.” He used the dabbawalas as an example of an efficient, low-cost delivery system and wondered if modern quick-commerce companies (like those delivering groceries or shoes in 10 minutes) can learn from them as India grows richer and delivery costs rise.

markets COST FIVE Trade President Exporters start talks with buyers on US tariffs
import duties on Indian goods from April 9, domestic exporters on Friday said they have started talks with their American buyers on ways to absorb these heavy taxes. According to them, communications between the Indian suppliers and American buyers have already started moving as these duties would hurt exports and job creation. «We have to talk to them about how to handle this unprecedented situation,» Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) President SC Ralhan said. The Ludhiana-based hand tool (an engineering sector item) exporter also said that the sector will not be able to absorb the high duties because of the high steel cost in the domestic market. «Over this, the government is considering imposing a safeguard duty, which they should reconsider. The US duty will impact demand,» Ralhan said, adding that certain steel prices in India have jumped from USD 50,000 per tonne to USD 55,000 per tonne in the last five days only.

markets COST BLOCK Trade President electronic strain Trump tariff puts Indian jewellery jobs on the chopping block
gems and jewellery industry, one of the country’s top export earners and a major source of employment, is staring at job losses after US President Donald Trump announced a 26% tariff on imports from India. The US is the sector’s largest market, and with demand expected to fall sharply, exporters fear that the move will put thousands of livelihoods at risk. In the last financial year (FY24), India exported about $33 billion worth of gems and jewellery, of which nearly $10 billion went to the US, according to official data. The new tariff would raise the current US import duty from around 6% to about 34%, making Indian products significantly more expensive for American buyers, said industry players. The Indian gems and jewellery sector is the country’s third-largest export to the US, after engineering and electronic goods. It employs millions of people, many of whom are involved in labour-intensive work such as diamond cutting, polishing, and jewellery crafting. India is also the global leader in diamond processing, handling about 90% of all cut and polished diamonds in the world.

COST Manufacturing economy wellness Trade President country Trump's tariff push is a race against time, and potential voter backlash
Trump's expansive new tariffs reverse a decades-long global trend of lower trade barriers and are likely, economists say, to raise prices for Americans by thousands of dollars each year while sharply slowing the U.S. economy. The White House is gambling that other countries will also suffer enough pain that they will open up their economies to more American exports, leading to negotiations that would reduce the tariffs imposed Wednesday. Or, the White House hopes, companies will reverse their moves toward global supply chains and bring more production to the United States to avoid higher import taxes. How will Americans react? But a key question for the Trump administration will be how Americans react to the tariffs. If prices rise noticeably and jobs are lost, voters could turn against the duties and make it harder to keep them in place for the time needed to encourage companies to return to the U.S. The Yale Budget Lab estimates the Trump administration's tariffs would cost the average household $3,800 in higher prices this year. That includes the 10% universal tariff plus much higher tariffs on about 60 countries announced Wednesday, as well as previous import taxes on steel, aluminum and cars. Inflation could top 4% this year, from 2.8% currently, while the economy may barely grow, according to estimates by Nationwide Financial.

COST Boxing film Actor performer reports Elon Musk-headed DOGE should look into $250m budget for Snow White, suggests Joe Rogan
Joe Rogan has ridiculed Disney’s Snow White remake after its disappointing box office debut. He suggested that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) should probe its production costs. The film, as per reports, had a budget of around $250 million but earned just $43 million at its opening weekend across the United States and Canada. In the second week of its running, the film saw a steep decline of 66 per cent in viewers. The film has become one of Disney’s biggest box office failures in recent years. As per reports, during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, comedian Kurt Metzger joined Rogan in dissecting the film’s downfall. Playing the footage of CGI dwarfs, Rogan said that it looked bad and did not look real at all. Responding to his comments, Metzger said that the makers put it all on the lead actor, Rachel Zegler. He said that her performance might not have been great, but that she’s young. He commented that Zegler did not write the script and that she did not decide to remove the dwarves. He added that Peter Dinklage did.

COST Waves Strategy Trade Experts International Exporters seek contract review as they brace for disruptions, disputes from new US tariffs
The sudden move is expected to disrupt commercial contracts and could lead to a wave of renegotiations and disputes, legal experts said. Businesses are considering a range of options, including renegotiation of pricing terms, alternative sourcing strategies, and lobbying for relief measures through trade bodies and bilateral agreements, they said. “Many Indian businesses are seeking clarity on whether existing pricing and delivery terms can hold in the face of sudden tariff impositions,” said Sanjay Notani, partner and co-head of international trade and customs practice at Economic Laws Practice (ELP). “Such abrupt tariff changes can destabilise ongoing commercial arrangements, especially where goods are already in transit. Contract enforcement may become contentious if parties seek to renegotiate or walk away, citing economic impracticability,” he said.

COST UPS security Apple President country Features Will Trump tariffs make Apple iPhones more expensive?
U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a series of sweeping tariffs on countries around the world that could drastically alter the landscape of global trade, and consumer goods like iPhones could be among the hardest hit, analysts said on Thursday. Shares of the company were down more than 8% in the wake of the tariff announcements, putting them on track for their worst day since September 2020. Apple sells more than 220 million iPhones a year; its biggest markets include the United States, China and Europe.

COST Reuters Trade President country reports Trump Tariffs: One key sector was exempted from US President Donald Trump duties. Which countries will benefit?
Donald Trump’s sweeping new tariffs, the White House said on Wednesday. The exemption will come as a relief to the U.S. oil industry, which had expressed concerns that new levies could disrupt flows and raise costs on everything from Canadian crude oil serving Midwest refineries to European cargoes of gasoline and diesel to the eastern seaboard, as per a report. Trump on Wednesday announced he would impose a 10 per cent baseline tariff on all imports to the United States and higher duties on dozens of the country's biggest trading partners, deepening a trade war that he kicked off on his return to the White House, Reuters reported. The trade protections, however, do not apply to energy imports from Canada or Mexico – which are already exempted under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement free trade deal – nor do they apply to energy imports from any other country, a White House official said, as per the report. Canada and Mexico are the two largest sources of imported crude oil to the United States, while Europe is a significant source of imported fuel to the U.S. East Coast, which has a dearth of oil refineries, Reuters reported.
