US election results: Is Donald Trump fearing defeat against Kamala Harris?
The Republican ex-president, who is in a dead heat with Democrat Kamala Harris in the race for the White House, has never acknowledged the legitimacy of his election defeats — from the 2016 Iowa primary to his presidential contest in 2020. His denialism deeply polarized the country last time around, and his continued attempts to sow distrust in US democracy have sparked fears of a repeat of the violence seen during the 2021 storming of the US Capitol.

De-dollarization debate: Multilateralism can solve the world’s financial needs
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Congress seeks all-party meet to get clarity on whether census would include enumeration of castes
Congress on Monday sought an all-party meeting to get clarity on whether the next census would include a detailed enumeration of all castes and whether the census will be used for determining the strength of each state in the Lok Sabha. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the extension of the tenure of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner has been notified and it means that the long-delayed Census that was due in 2021 will finally be conducted soon. «But there is still absolutely no clarity on two crucial issues. Will this new Census include a detailed enumeration of ALL castes in the country, in addition to that of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes that has been done in every Census since 1951? According to the Constitution of India, such a Caste Census is the sole responsibility of the Union Government,» Ramesh said in a post on X. «Will this Census be used for determining the strength of each state in the Lok Sabha as provided for in Article 82 of the Constitution of India (which says that the first Census taken after the year 2026 and the publication of its results will the basis of any such reconstitution)? Will this work to the disadvantage of states that have been pioneers in family planning?» the Congress leader said.

Transformer steel shortage could impact India's energy ambitions: GTRI
power sector expansion plans, think tank GTRI said on Monday. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that India's power sector is facing a 30 per cent shortage of CRGO steel, essential for electric motors and transformers. With domestic production meeting only about 10-12 per cent of demand, India relies heavily on imports, it added. It said the immediate cause of the CRGO steel shortage is import uncertainty caused by the delayed license renewals by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for many foreign suppliers from Japan, South Korea and China.

About a third of 2019's asthma cases related to prolonged exposure to PM2.5, global study finds
asthma cases reported in 2019 were related to prolonged exposure to pollution due to PM2.5 or fine particulate matter, a finding that researchers said provided «sufficient evidence» on the link between air pollution and asthma. The review of 68 studies conducted from 2019-2023 across 22 countries, including South Asian ones, showed that for every 10 micrograms per cubic metre increase in PM2.5, the risk of developing childhood or adult asthma increases by over 21 per cent. The respiratory condition is marked by recurring symptoms of wheezing, coughing and breathlessness and can severely impair quality of life. «We estimate that globally in 2019, almost a third of asthma cases are attributable to long-term PM2.5 exposure, corresponding to 63.5 million existing cases and 11.4 million new cases,» first author Ruijing Ni, from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, said.

Geopolitical clashes, not economic cycles, now drive market volatility: Viktor Shvets
«We exited a lot of the risk to outside the system, outside economic systems, I should add. So, in other words, it is much more in the politics, in polarisation, in geopolitics,» says Viktor Shvets, Macquarie Capital. Nikunj Dalmia: Let me start with a very basic question. What is your view of the world given that there are so many permutations and combinations which are there. US interest rates are likely to go down. China is stimulating their economy. There is a problem in Middle East and yet India seems to be slowing down. So, there are a lot of trends within trends when it comes to the global setup. Viktor Shvets: Well, my view of the world has not changed that much over the last four or five years. Effectively, the way I look at the world as in a twilight. We no longer have recessions. We no longer have recoveries. There is nothing to recover from. We live in a twilight somewhere between recessions and growth. Global growth rates are getting shallower and IMF is correctly highlighting that we are growing 50, 100 basis points less than we used to. But at the same time, we do not have the bad things. We do not have spikes in bankruptcies. We do not have spikes in bad debts.

Global economy chiefs fret over a Trump return as US election draws closer
h debt and escalating wars topped the official agenda at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings, but finance leaders spent much of their energy worrying about the potential impacts of a return of Donald Trump to power in November's U.S. presidential election. Republican candidate Trump's gains in recent polls to erase much of the early advantage of his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, was part of nearly every conversation among finance officials, central bankers and civil society groups attending the meetings in Washington this past week. Among concerns were Trump's potential to upend the global finance system with massive tariff increases, trillions of dollars more in debt issuance and a reversal of work to fight climate change in favor of more fossil fuel energy production.

Mission Possible: Ingredients are here for India to manufacture AI, lead AI revolution, says Nvidia's Jensen Huang
Artificial Intelligence is making computers an instrument for everyone and not just for the privileged few, believes Jensen Huang, the iconic founder and chief executive of chip maker Nvidia. He allayed the fears that AI could consume jobs or replace humans and said that the technology will make everything more efficient and productive, saving key resources and elevating human capabilities. In a free-wheeling conversation with Sruthijith KK at the ET Conversations event in Mumbai on Friday, Huang, 61, who steered the company out of turbulent early years and turned it into a $3.43 trillion behemoth that it is today, said that he still wakes up fearing that Nvidia could even now go out of business. No one in technology should get too comfortable or complacent, said the top boss helming the world’s second most valued company. His message to India’s IT services industry was unequivocal: Move from the back office to the front office and lead the AI revolution. Edited excerpts: I want to start with a core technical question. How is your leather jacket holding up in the Mumbai heat? (Laughs) It’s fine. Thank you! I enjoy the heat.
