Poland tightens visa rules for international students to prevent abuse
Poland has tightened its visa rules for international students. This action comes after Poland's «student visa scandal» that broke out in May. Poland's Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, announced a significant change in the country's visa policy, declaring that student visas will no longer be issued to foreigners without high school diplomas. The decision aims to prevent misuse of student visas by individuals seeking to work in the European Union illegally. This move comes after a scandal exposed by the Polish daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna revealed that some foreign nationals were obtaining student visas despite not meeting university admission requirements in their home countries. These individuals often failed to attend the universities they were registered at, instead using their student visas to work within the Schengen Area.

Understanding professional tax: What every employee and self-employed individual should know
The other day, I was sitting withtwo of myfriends—one a consultant and the other an employee—when the conversation turned to taxes. My colleague, an employee, was surprised to learn that he had been paying a professional tax of ₹200 every month, automatically deducted from his salary by his employer. The consultant, on the other hand, was fully aware of this tax, as he had to handle the payments himself.

When a ‘neutral umpire’ almost gave Lahore to India
India Independence Day: Partition of India, which marked the end of the British Raj, was a hasty, if not botched, affair, so it may sound strange to know Lord Mountbatten, who literally took Partition through, said he wanted an unified India. He said he tried everything to stop the partition. He even said that he regretted it but had no choice. Speaking to veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar, the last British Viceroy and Governor-General of India accepted that he could not «hold» the country and had to hasten the Independence process, leading to a massacre that killed nearly two million people. Riots in the UK make a case for social media supervision
The UK’s image as a multicultural country is the obvious loser from the far-right violence of the past fortnight, but in time these tragic events may have wider implications for the policing of social media everywhere. The role of X in disseminating often-false information and lionizing rabble-rousers, as well as X owner Elon Musk’s provocative tweets and irresponsible retweets, are all under the microscope.

The sleepy Czech town helping Europe compete in the global chip war
Roznov pod Radhostem was best known for its rum-drizzled sweet pies and an open-air museum showing off historical wooden houses. Then came an announcement that stirred the sleepy backwater. US chipmaker ON Semiconductor Corp. picked Roznov for a new $2 billion manufacturing hub in June. The past few weeks have seen a flurry of visits by property developers, the head of a local university and government officials followed around by television crews. The interest isn’t surprising given the investment will be the biggest by a foreign company in the Czech Republic for three decades. But it also reflects how there’s more riding on the plan to make a new generation of microchips than the prospects of a corner of central Europe.

Apple’s India business surpasses USD 23 billion as manufacturing growth reaches 50-year high
iPhone manufacturing and domestic sales of MacBooks, iMacs, iPads, Watches and AirPods lifted the value of Apple’s India operations to over Rs 2 lakh crore ($23.5 billion) in FY24, top officials said, up from Rs 1.15 lakh crore in the year before. They told ET that Apple has likely exhibited the fastest growth in production and exports by any company in the last 50 years in India, making the Cupertino-based tech giant the largest global value chain (GVC) operating domestically. Apple is also the first GVC in India that is rapidly shifting in part of its supply chain from China. According to the recent Economic Survey, India contributes around 14% to the US tech giant’s overall production, emerging as a key hub for its global exports. In FY23, India’s contribution was about 7%. iPhones dominate the numbers. Of the Rs 2-lakh crore valuation, iPhones worth a market value of around Rs 1.35 lakh crore ($15 billion) were exported last fiscal year, show calculations based on official data.
