Not happy with Centre for excluding Bengal government from Teesta talks with Bangladesh: Mamata Banerjee to PM
Mamata Banerjee on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing «strong reservation» over the Centre excluding the state government from discussions with Bangladesh regarding Teesta water sharing and the Farakka Treaty. Banerjee also urged the PM to not hold any such discussion with the neighbouring country without involving the West Bengal government. «I am writing this letter in context of the recent visit of Prime Minister of Bangladesh. It seems that water sharing issues relating to the Ganges and Teesta rivers may have been discussed during the meeting. Such unilateral deliberations and discussions without consultation and the opinion of the state government is neither acceptable nor desirable,» she said in a three-page letter to Modi. Bengal has a very close relationship with Bangladesh — geographically, culturally and economically, she noted.

RBI’s overseas gold holding touches a six-year low
gold reserves parked overseas dropped to the lowest in six years at the end of March--47% of the total—since it started accumulating the precious metal in December 2017. Data show that the RBI started bringing the gold to India in March 2022, coinciding with the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. This is in line with the trend of central banks globally that have turned cautious after the US government froze Russian foreign currency assets as the conflict began in February 2022. News that the RBI had brought back 100 tonnes of gold from the UK to India emerged at the end of last month. Governor Shaktikanta Das said this was because there is enough domestic storage capacity and nothing more should be read into it. At the end of March, the RBI’s total gold holdings amounted to 822.1 tons. A December 2023 survey by global investment manager Invesco of 57 central banks and other asset managers showed that they had increased exposure to gold 8-10 years ago, keeping it London and using it for swaps and to enhance yields, but that they were now moving the reserves back to their own countries, underscoring its role as a safe-haven asset. From 50% in 2020, the share of gold reserves held in their own countries is estimated to have gone up to 68% by December 2023 and will likely rise to 74% within the next five years, according to the survey.

Is Modi’s policy agenda at risk in new Parliament? Here's what might now happen to some of his key plans
Modi’s vast domestic agenda is in jeopardy after his party failed to win an outright majority in parliament for the first time in a decade, forcing it to work with a coalition of parties and grapple with an expanded opposition bench. Over the past decade that Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has ruled with absolute majorities, its advocated for — and pushed through — laws that critics say have furthered its majoritarian goals. Some of the outstanding policies on that agenda may now need to be reviewed or jettisoned after the electoral setback. Signs of acrimony between the BJP-led government and the opposition were visible Monday at the start of the first parliamentary session since election results earlier this month. A united opposition — which won about 230 of the 543 seats in the lower house, the Lok Sabha — are opposing the BJP’s selection of a temporary speaker of parliament and are protesting against a brewing scandal over college entrance exams.
