CBI has arrested the Executive Secretary to the CMD of the PSU Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd and six others in connection with alleged bribery of Rs 20 lakh to favour a Gujarat-based company to get the tender for Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in Odisha, officials said Sunday. Chairman and Managing Director's Executive Secretary Asish Razdan, Proprietor of a Rajkot-based private company Hetal Kumar Pravinchandra Rajyaguru, and five private persons — Shashank Kumar Jain, Somesh Chandra, Veer Thakkar, Rajiv Ranjan, and Tarang Agarwal- are the six people arrested in the matter, they said. «It was alleged that a conspiracy was laid amongst the said accused for getting the tender of Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), Odisha, awarded to the private company (HP Rajyaguru) in lieu of illegal gratification to an unknown public servant of Bridge and Roof Company(India) Ltd, Kolkata,» the CBI Spokesperson said. The CBI has alleged that Jain was demanding a bribe on behalf of unidentified officers of Bridge & Roof Company (India) Ltd, Kolkata, from Rajyaguru directly, as well as through another private person for the awarding of the tender to the private company. Rajyaguru had allegedly assured Jain he would send him Rs 20 lakh (approx), through hawala channels, meant for an unidentified public servant of Bridge & Roof Company(India) Ltd. The agency laid a trap when the transaction was to take place in Kolkata and arrested two private persons in connection with the case and recovered the bribe amount of Rs 19.96 Lakh. «During the investigation, it was found that the said bribe was allegedly meant for the Executive Secretary to CMD, Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd (a Public Servant).

The largecaps may have led the rally this week but we are not seeing any serious damage within the broader end of the market. How should one approach the mid and smallcap holdings in one's portfolio now? On one side, we have the compelling reasons for some of the largecap companies to buy into the portfolio because of the languishing valuations that they are putting currently and the kind of opportunity that they are providing at this point of time. They are probably becoming a better choice than some of the mid and the smallcaps. So, preference is definitely going towards largecaps.

S Krishnakumar, Director, Lion Hill Capital, says a lot of change is coming in technology and the larger companies would be in a far better position to take advantage of these changes and invest for growth in that area. “So I would like to be more invested in largecap IT but at slightly better valuations. Given that the growth is kind of a little slow, we could probably wait for some corrections to get in there.”What about the IT space? IT has erased all the losses of this year and now deal visibility seems to be picking up. Would you buy any midcap IT, smallcap IT name or stick to largecaps? I think the valuations in small and midcaps in the IT space have been generally higher than the premium to the largecap companies. So one would probably look to buy largecap companies at better valuations relative to their own growth. Also there is the fact that they can handle all competitive intensity and also technology just like chatGPT, AI etc. I think a lot of changes are happening in the way delivery of IT is done and we are seeing a lot of investments going into artificial intelligence and ML.

China to boost weak domestic consumption, address its troubled real estate sector and rein in local government debt, problems that are dragging down both Chinese and global growth, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva told Reuters. Georgieva said in an exclusive interview the messages will be delivered to Chinese authorities in a forthcoming IMF «Article IV» review of China's economic policies. The Fund will strongly urge Beijing to shift its growth model away from debt-fueled infrastructure investment and real estate, she said. «Our advice to China is use your policy space in a way that helps you shift your growth model towards more domestic consumption,» Georgieva said. «Because the traditional way of infrastructure, pumping in more money, in this current environment is not going to be productive.» China's aging population and falling productivity were playing a «suppressing role» in its growth rate, along with companies in the United States and Europe shifting supply chains away from China. China's problems in the real estate sector have also caused consumers to rein in spending, Georgieva said. «We actually project that without structural reforms, medium term growth in China can fall below 4%,» Georgieva said.

Edited excerpts:ET Now: I want to discuss the L&T buyback that opens on Monday, 18th September. Given the recent surge in the price of L&T over the last month, the buyback price is now around 3200. How do you view L&T's momentum moving forward? Additionally, do you anticipate strong participation in this buyback tender?Mahantesh Sabarad: Firstly, a disclosure, I own L&T shares. But to address your question, if you consider the number of shares set for buyback and extinguishment, it's just about 2.2%. This, in my view, won't significantly alter the stock's overall fundamentals. Typically, post-buyback, one examines whether there will be a significant improvement in return on equity, as the base capital, the equity capital, diminishes. Since the equity capital reduction is likely just around 2.2%, it's not substantial enough for the ROE to improve merely because of the buyback. As for retail investor participation? Given the narrowing gap between the buyback price and the current market price, many investors might opt out of the buyback. However, I do anticipate that the company will complete the buyback with full subscription, even if the overall number of shares offered might decrease.
