Performance on sustainability targets shapes top execs' pay
performance-based pay of their chief executives and senior management, to factor in the company's sustainability goal outcomes in appraisal KPIs amid their increasing influence on investor and consumer sentiments. Companies including ITC, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Mahindra & Mahindra, Lupin, Cipla and Emaar have started to link their performance in areas like water and carbon positivity, plastic neutrality, climate-resilience, and diversity and inclusion in hiring to the remuneration of their senior management. This comes at a time when ESG (environment, social and governance practices) is becoming a buzz word in business deals, investment decisions and even consumer response to products, industry experts and executives said. ESG goals are becoming more common in annual KPIs (key performance indicators) for executive leaders, said Anandorup Ghose, partner at Deloitte India. While the weightage to these goals varies by industry, approximately around 10-15% weightage is assigned to ESG-linked metrics, he said.

Yale climate opinion maps for India: New interactive tool maps public opinion at state, local levels
Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, in collaboration with C-Voter, Tuesday released the Yale Climate Opinion Maps for India. This new online interactive tool provides the first-ever estimates of public responses to climate change in 34 of India’s 36 states and union territories, and in 604 districts, depicting the variation in global warming knowledge, beliefs, risk perceptions, and policy preferences at state and local levels across the country. Prior studies of public responses to climate change in India have often provided results only at the national level. The recent national survey in India found that large majorities in India are worried about climate-related hazards, but until now we had little information about the diversity of climate opinions within the country. While national data show that 41% of people in India say they know a lot or something about global warming, there is substantial geographic variation within the country. In Gujarat, 52% of Indians know a lot or something about the issue, whereas in Maharashtra, only 33% report this level of knowledge. More Indians living in state capital cities say they know a lot or something about global warming compared to other districts. 74% think global warming will cause more severe heat waves and 85% are worried about global warming.

Toyota would pursue technologies that reduce use of fossil fuel: Dy MD Swapnesh Maru
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), the Indian arm of the Japanese auto giant Toyota, would want to use such technologies that align with its commitment to reducing carbon footprint as well as cutting down on the use of fossil fuels, Deputy Managing Director Swapnesh Maru said, while adding that they are cognizant of India’s energy scarcity and security situation. The TKM veteran, in a chat with ET, said his company had been adopting technologies that help cut down on emission. The company always pursued pathways that led to the best results, and adoption of a single technology would not achieve that, he said. “In a country as diverse as India, there is no one single best technology to achieve our objectives,” the Dy MD said, adding that they would continue to work on a multi-pronged approach for the Indian market. Hybrid vehicles and blended fuels came close to meeting these goals. “Today, energy scarcity and security are one of the biggest challenges. Any technology that will bring down carbon footprint or use of fossil fuel would be our priority.”

Government to amend Wakf law to usher in more transparency, gender diversity
government is all set to bring a Bill in Parliament to amend the 1995 law governing Waqf boards to ensure more accountability and transparency in their functioning and mandatory inclusion of women in these bodies, sources said. They claimed that the move comes in the backdrop of demands from within the Muslim community. The Bill to amend the Wakf Act, 1995, will make it mandatory for Waqf boards to register their properties with district collectors to ensure their actual valuation. There are 30 Waqf boards in the country. The sources on Sunday pointed out that the revenue generated by all Waqf properties is estimated at Rs 200 crore per annum. This is not in sync with the number of properties such bodies have, they said.

More positive from FPIs’ perspective for next 10-20 years; retail investors bringing down volatility: Navneet Munot
Navneet Munot, MD & CEO, HDFC AMC, and Bharat Shah, Executive Director, ASK Group, in conversation with Nikunj Dalmia of ET Now on the occasion of Prabhudas Lilladher 80th Anniversary . Naveneet Munot says he feels more positive for the next 10-20 years from foreign portfolio investors' perspective. What the retail presence is doing is bringing down the volatility of the market on a structural basis. Now, our SIP per month is Rs 21,000 crore. In 12 months, it is equal to $30 billion. Then there is NPS, EPFO, insurance, and all of that. This money every day is so large. It will provide more stability to the market. On FIIs and FPIs Navneet Munot: Despite whatever was happening in the world, most of the great market people like Amisha bhen (Amisha Vora, Prabhudas Lilladher co-owner & Joint MD), have served like foreign portfolio investors for the last 30-32 years when they started investing. Out of the last 30-32 years, for almost 24 or 25 years, they have been net buyers of Indian equities, except for six or seven calendar or financial years, where they have been a net seller of Indian equities.
