markets Digital Manufacturing economy Boeing Experts US manufacturing drops to 15-month low in October
US manufacturing activity slumped to a 15-month low in October and factories faced higher prices for inputs. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said on Friday its manufacturing PMI fell to 46.5 last month, the lowest level since July 2023, from 47.2 in September. A PMI reading below 50 indicates contraction in the manufacturing sector, which accounts for 10.3% of the economy. The decline in the PMI could be reflecting a strike by factory workers at planemaker Boeing, which has halted the production of its best-selling 737 MAX as well as 767 and 777 wide-body programs. The labor strife contributed to depressing industrial production in September.

markets Manufacturing Analysis economy electronic Commentary Samsung set to account for half of South Korea’s economic growth
Samsung Electronics Co. is poised to account for about half of South Korea’s economic growth this year, making its biggest contribution on record, Bloomberg Economics said, in commentary that underscores the company’s significance in an economy that ebbs and flows with the global semiconductor industry. Samsung is South Korea’s largest company, accounting for about 8% of manufacturing output and 17% of the main stock index’s total market capitalization. Based on the gross profit its South Korea-based units generates, the company will likely be responsible for 1.1 percentage points of the 2.2% growth that the economy is expected to post this year, BE economist Hyosung Kwon said Friday in an analysis based on a series of data available since 2008. The report underscores the importance of Samsung’s efforts to secure orders for high-bandwidth memory from Nvidia Corp. and other developers of computer processors that power artificial intelligence development. It also highlights the concentration of clout that Samsung has over Asia’s fourth-largest economy after global demand for memory chips increased.

markets COST security economy War country Israeli cabinet set to approve austerity budget amid wars
Israeli cabinet ministers were to start voting later on Thursday on a long-awaited wartime budget for 2025 that will rein in spending and raise a host of taxes to pay for the military conflicts that have engulfed the country. The wars in Gaza and Lebanon have cost Israeli coffers tens of billions of shekels on spending for defence — equipment and in manpower after hundreds of thousands of citizens were called into reserve duty — and in compensation for those impacted. «Our security also depends on the economy. We cannot have a strong military if we have no way of financing it,» Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the outset of the cabinet meeting before the budget vote, which could run into the night.
