India-Nigeria ties to a «higher level,» External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said India is «betting on Africa's rise» and the rebalancing and the multi-polarity of the world will not be complete until the continent takes its due place. Addressing the Nigeria-India Business Council (NIBC) here, the minister said the rebalancing and reordering of a new global order will only happen «when the core of it is economic… which is the rise of Africa has to be the economic rise of Africa.» The minister, who arrived in Nigeria on Sunday after attending the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Uganda, concluded his two-nation tour with an address to the NIBC.

Don't suddenly turn off the bourses
market closure on Monday during a trading week already shortened by Republic Day has raised eyebrows over India's business-friendly credentials. India's market capitalisation has overtaken that of Hong Kong, where a slump in valuations is being fed by China's weak economic prospects. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has begun an important stock-taking of India’s statistical system in the wake of several controversies related to official surveys and estimates, according to two persons aware of the discussions in the government. Some of these controversies were around the reliability of growth estimates, delays in conducting some economic surveys and the census, comprehensiveness of sampling methods, and the gap in the number of covid-19 deaths estimated by India and the World Health Health Organization. Officials from the statistics and finance ministries are part of the effort led by PMO officials, one of the two persons said.

Christine Lagarde, a former managing director of the International Monetary Fund who is now president of the European Central Bank, did not pull any punches in a speech she delivered at the annual World Economic Forum jamboree at Davos this month.

India has to work on the levers around capital absorption and capital flow incentivisation: Gokul Chaudhri
Gokul Chaudhri, Tax Leader,Deloitte India, says “the energy transition is going to be involving, let us say, the rollout of green bonds and green financing and so forth. And that will also bring in its own tax levers, because there will have to be an incentivisation around the entire green space as to how to enable the energy transitions to happen, including the PLI for a number of products that go into the green economy, plus also the incentivise around the green bonds. So there are a fair number of levers that India today has to enable that capital absorption as well as capital flow incentivisation.”
