Trump says 'no intention' to ease steel, aluminum tariffs
aluminum tariffs as Washington edges towards an all-out trade war with major partners. Since January, Trump has imposed levies on multiple trading partners and imports — including steel and aluminum — roiling financial markets and fanning fears that his plans could tip the world's biggest economy into a recession. The president told reporters aboard Air Force One he did not plan to make exceptions to the tariffs, saying: «No, I have no intention of that.» He instead doubled down on a pledge to impose reciprocal levies as soon as April 2 to remedy trade practices Washington deems unfair, raising the potential for more products and trading partners to be specifically targeted. «April 2 is a liberating day for our country,» he said.

World’s biggest stock rout deepens as Thai market rescue falters
Seven months after $4.5 billion was newly injected into the Vayupak Fund, analysts have been left perplexed by how little it’s helped the benchmark SET Index. The stock gauge has tumbled more than 16% this year, making it the world’s worst performer among 92 indexes tracked by Bloomberg. Over the past 12 months, foreigners pulled out $4.2 billion, the most across Southeast Asia.

How are economic recession and depression different from each other?
It’s a temporary, but prolonged, period of economic decline, marked by a slowdown in industrial production, and a fall in consumer spending, sales, and employment. Technically, this fall in economic activity, or negative growth in gross domestic product, should last at least two consecutive quarters, that is, six months, for it to qualify as a recession. Recession is considered an intrinsic part of an economic or business cycle, starting when the economy reaches a peak and ending when it touches a bottom or trough. There are several triggers or causes for a recession and various indicators that can hint at an impending slowdown. <div data-placement=«Mid Article Thumbn

Rating firms aren't forensic accountants: Amish Mehta, CEO, Crisil
Crisil's chief executive Amish Mehta said that the rating firm's work depends on the findings of the auditor, who has greater access to information and the disclosures made by rated companies. Speaking to ET, he also pointed out, without naming any borrower, that a sharp stock price movement does not mean they have to put out statements on the rated issue, but if a 'material event' is triggered, Crisil has consistently issued statements in seven days. Edited excerpts: What are the additional steps Crisil has taken to ensure the data provided by rated companies are genuine and authentic? First and foremost, we are not forensic accountants. The way we carry out our business is, we have a contractual arrangement with the issuer to rate based on the information they have furnished to us, which is essentially audited, and management interaction. Separately, we try to triangulate that with publicly available information, benchmarks with peers, talk to bankers, and look at GST data.

Raghuram Rajan: Who says the dollar is an exorbitant burden for America?
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. A prominent economist once told me that macroeconomic policy debates are all about the prime mover, to which other variables respond. The implication, he explained, is that “You can invert policy prescriptions simply by claiming a different forcing variable." A paper by Stephen Miran, published before he was nominated to chair US President Donald Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers, does precisely this.

Charting the global economy: Tariffs fuel US inflation concerns
A preliminary March survey of consumers showed sentiment sank by more than projected, while long-term inflation expectations jumped as the Trump administration pushes forward with higher duties on foreign goods just as price pressures showed signs of easing. Meanwhile, the UK economy shrank unexpectedly at the start of the year on weaker manufacturing and construction. In China, the economy remains hamstrung by persistent deflation.

Americans lose confidence in economy as Trump’s tariff policies fuel inflation and drive consumer sentiment to 2-year low
consumer sentiment index nosedived to 57.9 in March, marking a 10.5% drop from February and falling short of economists’ forecasts. This reading—the lowest since November 2022—reflects growing anxiety over inflation and market volatility, exacerbated by President Trump’s aggressive tariff policies. The one-year inflation outlook surged to 4.9%, the highest in 16 months, while the five-year expectation hit 3.9%, a level unseen since 1993.

Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL: Full schedule, squad, past wins, and more
In 2012, KKR won their first title because of Sunil Narine and Robin Uthappa. They won the title in 2014 again — the first season with Andre Russell in their ranks. The next three years showed promise but didn’t bring KKR another title, leading to Gautam Gambhir’s exit ahead of the 2018 auction. Dinesh Karthik took over as captain in 2018, guiding KKR to a third-place finish in his debut season. Midway through the 2020 IPL, he stepped down, passing the leadership to Eoin Morgan, who led the team to their third final in 2021. However, Morgan went unsold the following year, making way for Shreyas Iyer, who ultimately steered KKR to their third IPL title in 2024.

Commodities navigate Trump trade turbulence
global commodity markets as they navigate the mounting challenges posed by US President Donald Trump's erratic and inconsistent trade policies. While the media focus on each headline-grabbing announcement and social media post about new and retaliatory tariffs from the US leader and his administration, commodity markets are busy doing what they have done so well in the past, adapting to rapidly changing circumstances. For commodities it's important to make distinctions between those already being affected by Trump's trade policies, those likely to be in the future, and those unlikely to suffer direct impact, but which might feel second-round effects from a slowing world economy. The first group includes steel and aluminium, with Trump's 25% tariffs on all imports of the metals having started. The main impact is likely to be price increases for steel and aluminium in the United States, as domestic producers have limited scope to boost output significantly.

Donald Trump is reason behind rise in Chinese stocks prices? Here's what we know so far
Donald Trump's wide-ranging trade war rouses fears of recession, global investors have found an unlikely new sanctuary: Chinese equities. Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng Index — where many major Chinese companies are listed — is up 17 since Trump entered the White House in January. That compares to an about 9 per cent drop in the S&P 500, which has also shed $4 trillion in market value from record highs last month, Reuters reported. Trump's erratic pronouncement on tariffs and moves to slash federal government spending have challenged assumptions about the appeal of U.S.

Japan's unions win largest pay hike in more than three decades
Japan's largest labor union group said its workers secured the highest pay deal in more than three decades, supporting the case for further gradual interest rate hikes from the Bank of Japan. Labor unions under the federation known as Rengo have so far secured a pay gain of 5.46% on average in ongoing annual wage negotiations, according to its initial tally released on Friday. That's the highest level since 1991 when compared with past final tally figures, and exceeded last year's initial reading of 5.28%.
