Is this a sentiment driven rally or a flows driven rally and should we sell off? Anand Shah answers
Anand Shah, Head- PMS & AIF Investments, ICICI Prudential AMC, says, this is a market which has strong legs of earnings and one needs to be very focussed, very careful and continue to buy the right businesses which will benefit from a multi-year growth which is a very clear possibility as the stars are aligned today.Where do you think the entire volatility of the election cycle would kick in? Today, we are not talking about it, but soon we will start talking about it. Historically, we have seen that the election cycle in India is always a swing event. It is not a binary event, but a swing event. What should one do?Our experience of the last 20-23 years is that notwithstanding the macro risks that exist in the market, focussing on stock picking, identifying the right businesses has actually paid off very well. To be very honest, many of the macro risks had a much larger impact than elections – be it the global financial crisis or more recently Covid. There would always be external forces which will push down markets and one needs to be cognisant of that and that is why the asset allocation of an individual is very important.

With AI, Himanshu Gupta is giving the climate forecast for supplychains a makeover
Himanshu Gupta knows full well the heavy toll climate change is taking on agriculture. Growing up in India and eventually working in public policy, he saw how the unpredictably late monsoon season was damaging crops and worsening farmers’ lives. “I always knew there was a big problem,” he said of the climate change-fueled dangers to agricultural commodities like cotton and the resulting impact on livelihoods.

Artificial Wombs for Premature Babies Are a Step Closer to Reality
The first artificial womb to gestate a human baby is fast approaching reality. Food and Drug Administration regulators will weigh next week how scientists should conduct the first human tests of bag-like wombs, meant to nurture babies born so premature that modern medicine struggles to keep them healthy. The agency plans to meet with outside advisers and discuss behind closed doors what the agency called “confidential commercial information," citing a federal law that allows nonpublic meetings to discuss trade secrets.

The world must welcome the ascent of mixed-gender sports
The assumption that an athlete’s birth sex dictates his or her performance level has made transgender participation in sports a lightning rod—but the issue is moot in coed sports, from competitive sailing to pickle-ball to e-sports. And in the future, athletics are likely to evolve so that mixed-gender competition becomes common. That will lead to a rise in sports that are just as rivetting but more inclusive.

Today’s world war on inflation is yielding no winners
Another month, another suspenseful inflation number. India’s 6.8% rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Tuesday was lower than expected because of slower-rising vegetable prices that however still jumped 26%. The US’s August inflation number released on Wednesday, meanwhile, disrupted the cheery view that the US economy is managing to avoid a recession while inflation does the Federal Reserve’s bidding without needing more interest rate hikes.

Mumbai man drowns girlfriend in bucket, wife helps him stuff the body in suitcase
The man, Manohar Shukla, allegedly murdered his 28-year-old girlfriend, Naina Mahat, her Naigaon residence on August 9. Manohar's wife, Poornima, allegedly helped him in helping him stuff the body in a suitcase. According to police, the couple then traveled over 150 kilometers on a scooter, carrying the lifeless body of Naina in a suitcase. To further avoid suspicion, they also brought along their two-year-old daughter. The grim details of the murder came to light during the investigation into a missing person complaint lodged by the victim's sister in mid-August. Manohar Shukla was taken into custody from his residence in Vasai, while his wife, Poornima, was arrested later in connection with the case. During questioning, Manohar revealed that he had taken this extreme step because Naina Mahat, a hairstylist who occasionally worked in the film industry, had refused to withdraw two complaints filed against him in 2019, one for rape and another for assault.

Real trade right now is in largecaps, but do not expect further downside in mid and smallcaps: Rohit Srivastava
Rohit Srivastava, Founder & Market Strategist, Indiacharts.com, says For the midcap index, the reading was at around 89 on the day before’s close. Yesterday's closing, it has come back to 63 and right now live, it is trading at 60. For the small cap index, the similar thing would be the day before, it would have been at 87.98. After yesterday's close, it is down to 59 and right now also it is at around 59. As mid and smallcap indices are coming very close to the 20-day moving average, we will expect them to get support and bounce back over the next couple of days.”Yesterday's fall and today's follow-up activity, how do you read it?This is part of a minor correction in what is a bigger trend in favour of mid and smallcaps. We have to view it from both the short term time horizon and the long term time horizon. In the short term, indicators like the RSI is hitting overbought but what that usually means is we get a one day knee-jerk reaction, maximum two days and then that is it, because then it takes only two days for the RSI to come off from something like 85-87 which is an extremely overbought state to something like a 65-66 or even 60 which we have already seen yesterday and are further seeing today. Both the mid and smallcap indices now are coming very close to the 20-day moving average and that is more significant because that is where we will expect them to get support and bounce back over the next couple of days.

Banking sector is in the best form and shape today: Vinit Sambre
«There are actually no any big negative signs or any big negative triggers which can spiral into a problem as of now but I am saying that the world is in a very disorderly state,» says Vinit Sambre, DSP Mutual Fund.Enough and more has been discussed and debated that where and why midcap stocks are up. But after the sharp selloff yesterday, do you think we are nearing the end of the party for mid and the small cap stocks for an extended period of time? Is the party over so the Cinderella's of the world be worried now?I think it is extremely tough to really make out of these daily moves and the way current sentiments are around the midcap, small cap stocks, the kind of flows which we are seeing in these categories, I would say that these small corrections will be really bought into and people may not really give up till the time there are, let us say, bigger triggers. I mean, there are actually no any big negative signs or any big negative triggers which can spiral into a problem as of now but I am saying that the world is in a very disorderly state.

Byju’s hid $533 million in hedge fund once run from Miami IHOP, lenders allege
Byju’s, allegedly hid $533 million in an obscure three-year-old hedge fund that once said its principal place of business was an IHOP pancake restaurant in Miami, according to lenders trying to recover the cash. Byju’s last year transferred more than half a billion dollars to Camshaft Capital Fund, the investment firm founded by William C. Morton when he was just 23 years old, some Byju’s lenders claim in a lawsuit. Morton’s fund received the money despite an apparent lack of formal training in investing, according to the lenders. What’s more, luxury cars — a 2023 Ferrari Roma, a 2020 Lamborghini Huracán EVO, and a 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith — have been registered in Morton’s name since the transfer occurred, according to court papers.

Vladimir Putin to comment on 2024 election bid by end of year
Vladimir Putin said Tuesday he will only comment on whether he will run for re-election in 2024 after the ballot is officially announced later this year. Putin has led Russia since the turn of the century, winning four presidential elections and briefly serving as prime minister in a system where political opposition has become virtually non-existent. «According to the law, parliament must make a decision at the end of the year,» Putin told the audience at the Eastern Economic Forum in the Pacific port of Vladivostok. «When the elections are announced, when the date is set, then we will talk about it,» he added. Presidential elections in Russia are officially set by parliament and held every six years, after the term limit was lengthened from four years previously.
