ONDC (open network for digital commerce) has started getting traction in the e-commerce sector and so far five lakh sellers have been onboarded on the platform, a senior official said on Friday. Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh said the ONDC was set up primarily to democratise and make digital commerce accessible to smaller players. «It has started getting traction in the last two years. Five lakh sellers have on-boarded of which 70 per cent are small and medium sellers. In April, ONDC facilitated 7.22 million transactions,» Singh told reporters here. The ONDC aims to promote an open platform for all aspects of e-commerce retail. It would help small retailers expand their business through e-commerce medium and reduce dominance of giants in the sector.

Top car makers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor and Mercedes-Benz say the average buying age, including for luxury vehicles, has fallen from the 40s to almost mid-30s between 2018-19 to 2023-24. Companies said over 70% of electric cars are currently bought by those in their 20s and 30s. In the same period, the average age for Apple iPhone buyers has declined from 33-34 to 28-29 and for large screen televisions (size 55-inches and upwards) from 35-36 years to 29-30, as per industry estimates. Similar is the case with frost-free refrigerators and dishwashers.

The apex court had consequently said panchayats can only manage and control the land which has been taken from the owners and cannot claim title. «It is pertinent to note here that for the land taken from the proprietors by applying pro-rata cut from the permissible ceiling limits of the proprietors, management and control alone vests with the panchayat but such vesting of management and control is irreversible and the land would not revert to the proprietors for redistribution as the common purposes for which land has been carved out not only include the present requirements but the future requirements as well,» it had said.

They hope to decide on Japanese contractors and start the development process by March 2025.
