Government considers extending FAME II scheme to FY25
electric vehicles (EVs) into the next financial year and is likely to seek additional resources in the interim budget to expand its corpus. With the third edition of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme yet to get a nod from the finance ministry, possibilities are being explored to extend the current edition till a new supporting framework is put in place, sources aware of the details told ET. «Additional funds for FAME II can be sought in a vote on account,» said a person aware of the matter. The extension would not require multiple approvals as needed for a fresh scheme and will help maintain momentum in the market in the interim, he added. Next year's budget will be a vote on account as general elections are due in April-May.

IL&FS to sell stakes in three road assets as InvIT plan fails
The road projects are Baleshwar-Kharagpur Expressway (BKEL), Jharkhand Infrastructure Implementation Company (JIICL) and Jharkhand Road Projects Implementation Company (JRPICL). With this sale, the board is looking to address a combined debt of ₹3,500 crore across these projects. The IL&FS board has in several court documents cited delays in approvals from lenders, slow progress and viability concerns for BKEL. For the other two projects, failure to receive annuities and approval for transfer to InvIT from the government of Jharkhand led to the move. The board, in its latest update to the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), had cited considerable delays in approvals from lenders, including State Bank of India, slow progress and resultant setback on project viability in the case of BKEL as the reason why «transfer of the asset to the InvIT may not be possible, and alternate resolution plan would have to be formulated», said an IL&FS spokesperson. In the case of JIICL and JRPICL, the board has cited failure to receive annuities and approval for transfer to InvIT from the government of Jharkhand. BKEL is engaged in operating and managing about 477 lane km of Baleshwar-Kharagpur national highway in Odisha and West Bengal under a concession from the National Highways Authority of India on a toll basis. JIICL is engaged in operating and managing approximately 160 lane km of Section VII Ranchi Ring Road in Jharkhand while JRPICL is engaged in operating and managing about 664 lane km of roads developed under the Jharkhand Accelerated Road Development Programme.

Makeshift bridge set up for Christmas celebrations in Neyyattinkara town in Kerala collapses, several injured
makeshift bridge, set up as part of Christmas celebrations at Poovar near Neyyattinkara here, collapsed on Monday night causing injuries to several persons, police said. A senior officer of the district said that 7-8 persons were injured in the incident with one of them — a woman — suffering a major fracture in her leg. «The rest suffered only minor injuries,» he said. The officer said the incident occurred around 9 pm when several persons got on top of the bridge which could not support their weight and slanted to one side, toppling those standing there. The temporary bridge was set up for people to cross over a wall to the other side to see a waterfall and a nativity scene depicting the birth of Jesus as well as other decorations as part of the Christmas celebrations, the officer said. The bridge was just around five feet above the ground and was meant to support a few people at a time, he said. «However, several persons climbed on to it simultaneously which resulted in the accident,» the officer said. Lok Sabha polls: Govt to hold chief secy meet, push states on beneficiary schemes, service delivery
Ayushman Bharat card, Jan Aushadhi Kendra, tap water connections and more hours of uninterrupted power supply. The third National Chief Secretaries' Conference, scheduled to be held on December 27-28 in New Delhi, will mull the overarching theme of 'Promoting Ease of the Living' across five key social aspects — schooling, drinking water, electricity, health and wellness and land & property. To be chaired by PM Narendra Modi, the conference will be pushing for better schemes and service delivery in both urban and rural areas, with the help of technology and good governance tools. The theme of the conference, the second one in 2023, is also quite in tune with the ruling NDA government's focus on beneficiaries of its flagship schemes or the 'labharthis' who have emerged as a unique socio-political constituency for the current dispensation. The steadfast focus on the 'labharthis' is also, in fact, being borne out in the ongoing Viksit Bharat Sankalp yatra wherein government servants have been deployed to take the message of central government beneficiary schemes and its achievements across states. In the case of the new 'Ease of Living' focus, over 5,000 officials from across state governments and the Centre have already been engaged in the exercise, holding several workshops on the five sub-themes to states and sending details of success stories and feedback. Ease of Living In a September 16 meeting chaired by the Cabinet secretary, state governments were told that the overarching theme for the conference 'Ease of Living' is to focus on two facets — access to schemes «especially individual beneficiary schemes» and «ensuring the quality of service delivery». For individual beneficiary schemes, simplification and

GTRI says 51.5% agri exports from just 5 products makes sector vulnerable to global prices, demand
sugar and this makes the sector vulnerable to fluctuations in global prices and demand, a report by economic think tank GTRI said on Monday. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said these five products — basmati rice, non-basmati rice, sugar, spices, and oil meals — account for 51.5 per cent of India's total agriculture exports. Furthermore, India grapples with various domestic challenges including infrastructural deficits, quality control issues, and non-tariff barriers, all of which impede the growth and competitiveness of its agricultural sector, it said. «This makes them (agri exports) vulnerable to fluctuations in global prices and demand,» it said, adding these commodities also face frequent export bans in India. At present export of non-basmati rice is currently banned from India and India is also fighting at the WTO (World Trade Organisation) to protect subsidies to rice and wheat under a public stock holding programme. Besides, certain WTO member countries have taken India to disputes on sugar for providing subsidies to farmers.

Manchester United vs. Aston Villa: Kick-off time, team news, injuries, prediction, where to watch Premier League
Manchester United and Aston Villa will clash on Tuesday in the Premier League when both of them have been going through a bad phase with disappointing performances. While Erik ten Hag’s side have failed to score in four straight games in all competitions and were humbled in their 2-0 defeat at West Ham before Christmas, the incredible run of Unai Emery's team's 15 Premier League home wins in a row is over as they drew 1-1 at home against bottom club Sheffield United last time out. Despite this, it has been a superb year for Villa and their main aim for 2024 is to finish in the top six and try to win the UEFA Europa Conference League.
