INVESTING FOR SHORT-TERM GOALS: NPS Tier II can be a better bet than hybrid mutual funds
While individuals are increasingly investing in hybrid mutual funds, they can look at a Tier II account of National Pension System (NPS) which invests in both equity and debt, has no lock-in at all, and the expense ratio is significantly low making it the lowest-cost pension product available in the country. This voluntary savings facility is available as an add-on to any Tier-1 account holder and investors can select different pension fund managers for Tier I and Tier II accounts to diversify the money across fund managers.

2023 summer was the hottest summer on record since 1880, NASA confirms
NASA. The scorching heat waves experienced in North America, Europe, Asia, and other regions are attributed to human-induced global warming, compounded by the recurring climate phenomenon known as El Niño. NASA's analysis reveals that August 2023 was exceptionally hot, with temperatures 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.2 degrees Celsius) above the average for summer. This extreme heatwave affected a staggering 57 million people in the southern and southwestern United States, reaching the highest category of severity. When considering the combined temperatures for June, July, and August, they were 0.41 degrees Fahrenheit (0.23 degrees Celsius) warmer than all previous summers. This alarming increase underscores the growing impact of global warming on the climate. In fact, NASA scientists confirmed that July 2023 was the hottest July on record, with the last five hottest Julys occurring within the past five years.

Gujarat assembly passes Bill unifying 11 university acts; Congress says it will reduce autonomy
Gujarat assembly on Saturday passed the Gujarat Public Universities Bill which seeks to unify different Acts to smoothen the governance of 11 universities in the state and properly implement the 2020 National Education Policy (NEP). While Education Minister Rushikesh Patel called the Bill a «milestone,» the opposition Congress said it infringes on the autonomy of the universities and is detrimental to academic freedom. With this Bill, 11 Acts governing as many universities stand repealed. The Bill, passed by a voice vote, provides common guidelines to ensure «smooth governance» of these universities through «better coordination, cooperation and proper utilisation of higher education facilities.» It also seeks to ensure «sound finance control, better-quality higher education and measures to create excellent quality standards in the face of global competition.» With the exception of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU), the Gujarat Governor will serve as chancellor of ten universities.

Explore possibilities of extending benefits of COVID-19 schemes to all orphan children: SC to Centre
Supreme Court has said, asking the Centre if there are ways the benefits of schemes, including PM Cares fund, which were meant for children orphaned during the COVID-19 pandemic, can be extended to all orphans. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra on Friday asked Additional Solicitor General Vikramjeet Banerjee, appearing for Centre, to seek instructions in the matter. «You have rightly brought out a policy for orphans, whose parents died due to the COVID pandemic. An orphan is an orphan, irrespective of whether the parents died in an accident or illness. By bringing these schemes, you are attending to the condition and not the parentage. »You seek an instruction on whether benefits of schemes including PM Cares fund meant for children orphaned during the COVID-19 pandemic can be extended to other orphaned children," the bench told Banerjee. The ASG said he was recently given a brief to appear in the matter and would respond to the court's query in four weeks' time.

Audi wants to launch more electric vehicles in India but it has a condition
Audi's India unit said on Friday that any potential cut down on electric vehicle (EV) import taxes would help the German carmaker experiment better with models and pricing in the world's third-largest car market. «If we get a window of three to five years where the government is able to reduce the duties, it will let us experiment what models make sense for India and help in terms of pricing points,» Audi India head Balbir Singh Dhillon told Reuters on the sidelines of a showroom launch in Bengaluru. Reuters reported last month that the Indian government is working on a new EV policy that would slash import taxes for automakers that commit to some local manufacturing.

After Chinese betting app scam, Gujarat cops now chasing Malaysian 'Big Boss' in Rs 33 crore scam
Chinese betting app scam, Gujarat police are now chasing a Malaysian individual known as 'Big Boss' in another scam that is said to be worth Rs 33 crore. As per a report in The Times of India, cops are hunting for the Malaysian 'Big Boss, whose real name is Tan Chee Keat, or Kenny, along with four compatriots. The scam surfaced after it was found that a substantial sum amounting to Rs 33 crore had traversed from numerous bank accounts in two districts of Saurashtra to Kuala Lumpur. Cops are currently investigating to ascertain the number of people who were enticed by the accused with promises of substantial returns on bets placed through these fraudulent apps. On August 12, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) received information that an NRI (non-resident Indian) residing in Malaysia, Rohit Vadher, along with a Malaysian national, Chua Ming Ho, alias Robin, and a resident of Sutrapada in Gir Somnath, Mahek Chhag, were engaged in cheating individuals through betting and gambling apps while also allegedly establishing counterfeit bank accounts. Utilising informers and technical surveillance, the ATS successfully identified Chagg and eight individuals from Veraval and Rajkot who were collaborating with Vadher and the five Malaysians in their illicit activities.

Northern Railways' Lucknow division spends Rs 69 lakh to catch 168 rats!
Lucknow division of Northern Railways has spent a staggering amount of Rs 69.5 lakh between 2020 and 2022 to catch just 168 rats, according to a report in the Times of India. This astonishing expenditure breaks down to approximately Rs 23.2 lakh per year or slightly over Rs 41,000 per rodent. The startling figures were disclosed in response to an RTI query posed by Chandrashekhar Gaur, an RTI activist based in Neemuch. Pest and rodent control activities within the railways fall under the category of primary maintenance. This primary maintenance is carried out on trains that belong to the respective railway divisions. Northern Railways comprises five divisions: Delhi, Ambala, Lucknow, Ferozepur, and Moradabad. It is noteworthy that Gaur's RTI inquiry was directed at Northern Railways, with only Lucknow division providing a comprehensive response to his queries. «So far, the Ferozpur and Moradabad divisions have not replied. The Ambala & Delhi divisions' replies scurried past the questions, much like a clever rodent would on seeing a trap,» the Times of India report added. However, even Lucknow division's response lacked information on the extent of damage caused by rodents. In this regard, the division's central public information officer stated, «details not available for damaged goods and items. No assessment of damage has been made.»
