Plan afoot to reclassify items for GST clarity in FMCG sector
Central Board of Indirect taxes and Customs (CBIC) is planning to prepare a list of products which end up in litigation purely due to classification issues. The fitment committee is likely to look into such items where there is a minor change in composition but the tax slabs are different, creating confusion in tax liability, mostly in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, which recently attracted many tax notices. The list will be referred to the group of ministers on rate rationalisation committee when the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meets next, said people aware of the matter.

What the US economy needs is a cheap date
date night was becoming a financial strain. There has been a lot of theorising about why so many Americans feel worse off economically. True, real wages are now finally increasing, the labour market is great, the stock market is up, and consumers are spending. But none of this amounts to a complete picture of Americans' quality of life. And people will tend to think it has declined if things they value feel like a stretch.

Karnataka bans artificial colours in Gobi Manchurian, Cotton Candy
Karnataka government on Monday banned the use of artificial colours, including Rhodamine-B, in foods like Gobi Machurian and cotton candy, after reports of health concerns due to the poor quality. The state’s move follows a similar ban imposed by Goa, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry last month, all of whom came down heavily on the popular Indo-Chinese dish. Karnataka Health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that such artificial colours were of poor quality and posed harms to public health, and warned of serious action against anyone who continues to use them in food production. Taking to social media platform X on Monday, he said violation of this ban may result in imprisonment for up to seven years and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh. According to the food safety and quality department, samples of 'Gobi Manchurian' and 'Cotton Candy' being sold across the state were collected and analysed in laboratories. “Out of 171 samples collected from Gobi Manchurian, artificial colours were detected in 107 samples. Similarly, out of 25 cotton candy samples collected, artificial colours were found in 15 samples,” a statement from the department said.

Here's how India's $100 billion trade pact with EFTA will benefit Indians; Swiss watches, chocolates to get cheaper
European Free Trade Association (EFTA), comprising Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, aiming to boost trade and investments between the two regions. This agreement is expected to bring several benefits to Indian consumers and the economy. Key Benefits for Indian Consumers One of the major benefits of this trade pact is the phased-out custom duties on imported goods, which will enable domestic consumers to access high-quality Swiss products such as watches, chocolates, biscuits, and clocks at lower prices. The agreement includes tariff concessions on a range of products imported from Switzerland, including seafood, mediterranean fruits, coffee, oils, sweets, processed foods, and wine, among others. This will lead to a drop in prices of these products in Indian markets, making them more affordable and accessible to Indian consumers.
