Why investors should not ignore actively-managed funds just yet
Mid- and small-cap funds: the bright spot The performance of mid- and small-cap funds stand out in the SPIVA India Scorecard, especially over the short and medium term. In the first half of 2023, the benchmark S&P BSE 400 MidSmallCap Index rose by a commendable 12.4%. However, what makes actively managed funds shine in this category is the fact that only 45.3% of fund managers underperformed the index during this period.

Vizhinjam: The port that almost wasn’t built
Thiruvananthapuram: Zhen Hua 15, a ship twice the length of a football field, made history last week when it docked at the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Kerala after sailing down the East China Sea with a cargo of cranes for the port. For the Zhen Hua 15, it was just a 42-day journey, but for India’s newest mega port, the arrival of the Chinese ship marked the end of a three-decade-long wait. The port, which is fully owned by the Kerala government, is being built by Adani Vizhinjam Ports Pvt.

Simultaneous e-auctions for other mining sites were going on and there was technical glitch: SC
Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the Jindal Steel & Power Ltd’s (JSPL) appeal seeking a direction to the coal ministry to refrain from taking further steps for development of the Chhendipada coal mine in Odisha. Rungta Sons, which had emerged as the highest bidder in an e-auction of commercial coal mines on February 28, was granted the Odisha coal block. Having lost the Chhendipada (revised) coal block to Rungta Sons, a subsidiary of Jharkhand-based Rungta Mines, JSPL alleged that it was wrongly and unfairly prevented from submitting its next higher bid due to glitches on the MSTC portal. A bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud upheld the Delhi High Court’s July 25 decision that rejected JSPL’s petition for quashing of the grant of the Odisha coal block to Rungta Sons. Counsel Gauri Rasgotra, appearing for JSPL, claimed that technical glitches on the MSTC portal during the e-auction on February 27 had prevented it from submitting a higher bid for the mine that has 513 million tonnes of geological reserves.

Union Cabinet approves 13 GW renewable energy project in Ladakh
Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the project on Green Energy Corridor (GEC) Phase-II — Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) for 13 gigawatt renewable energy project in Ladakh. The project is targeted to be set up by financial 2029-30 with a total estimated cost of Rs 20,773.70 crore and central financial assistance at 40 per cent of the project cost — Rs 8,309.48 crore. Keeping in view the complex terrain, adverse climatic conditions and defence sensitivities of the Ladakh region, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) will be the implementing agency for this project. The transmission line for evacuating this to-be-produced power will pass through Himachal Pradesh and Punjab up to Kaithal in Haryana, where it will be integrated with the national grid. An interconnection is also planned from this project in Leh to the existing Ladakh grid so as to ensure a reliable power supply to Ladakh. «It will also be connected to the Leh-Alusteng-Srinagar line to provide power to Jammu and Kashmir.

We are bullish on power capex, rural consumption and pharma sector: Manish Gunwani
«Actually, I do think that while obviously smallcaps tend to be volatile on a two-three-year basis, that is where the big return will be made,» says Manish Gunwani, Head-Equities, Bandhan AMC. So, where do we start with — your great call on Tata Group, hotel stocks and hospital stocks, or we should simply talk about the big picture first? No, so I think the new themes we are more positive on which are basically things related to power capex or revival in rural consumption, pharma, so these are the new set. The ones you said are a bit old right now.
