Bangladesh interim govt files barrage of cases against Sheikh Hasina
Bangladesh has filed more than a dozen cases so far against Sheikh Hasina since her ouster as prime minister, people familiar with the matter said, alleging that the cases have been filed at the insistence of Hasina's adversary, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Last week, Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal also launched an investigation against the former PM and nine others on charges of «genocide and crimes against humanity» during the student protest that led to her ouster. The tribunal is a domestic court that deals with the issues of international crimes such as war crimes and crimes against humanity. Last Tuesday, the deposed PM was slapped with a murder case along with six others over the death of a grocery shop worker amid the July unrest. The next day, a case of enforced disappearance was filed against her and several former members of her cabinet, on charges of kidnapping a lawyer in 2015. On Saturday, another case was filed against her, in connection with the death of a student during the protest.

Is JD Vance's shocking comparison of Kamala Harris to Jeffrey Epstein a desperate move?
JD Vance made a controversial comparison between Kamala Harris and Jeffrey Epstein, in a recent Fox News Sunday interview. Vance criticized Harris' campaign and suggested that internal polling from the Donald Trump campaign indicated Harris was not making significant progress with voters. He argued that voters did not believe Harris could effectively address inflation issues in the U.S. This led him to make a provocative statement: he compared the idea of giving Harris control over inflation policy to giving Jeffrey Epstein control over human trafficking policy. Vance claimed that the American people were too smart to support Harris as a fresh start, as per the reports of Yahoo news. During the interview with Shannon Bream, who maintained a neutral demeanor, Vance also expressed skepticism about the impact of recent polling data. He seemed particularly frustrated by a new ABC/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, which showed Harris leading Trump both nationally and in key swing states. According to the poll, Harris was ahead of Trump by 4 points nationally and by 6 points among likely voters. This was the first poll in this election cycle indicating Harris' lead over Trump beyond the margin of error. Also Read: Where is Melania Trump? CAS) rejected wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification, emphasizing that it is an athlete's responsibility to stay within the weight limit, and no exceptions can be made on that basis, it said in its full verdict. However, CAS acknowledged the «draconian» consequences of failing the weigh-in on the second day. Vinesh was disqualified from the Paris Olympics after being found overweight by 100g on August 8, just before competing in the gold medal bout in the women's 50kg category.

'Weight limit rules same for all': CAS gives reasons for dismissing Vinesh Phogat's plea against olympics disqualification
Vinesh Phogat's appeal for an Olympic silver medal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said that athletes will have to ensure that they remain below their weight limit and no exception can be provided under any circumstance. Vinesh was disqualified from the women's 50kg freestyle final for being 100 grams overweight, following which the wrestler appealed against the International Olympic Committee (IOC). CAS published a detailed decision explaining the rejection of Vinesh's appeal on Monday where it emphasized the importance of athletes adhering to the weight limit rules, stating that no tolerance is allowed even for small excesses or circumstances like the weight of the singlet or water retention.

ED raids in 'illegal' broadcast of T20 cricket world cup matches
Gujarat Police, undertook searches in multiple states on Monday as part of a money-laundering probe linked to alleged unauthorised streaming of ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 matches by a «betting» website. The federal agency said in a statement that 20 premises in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru (Karnataka), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) and Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) were covered by its officials and those from the Ahmedabad cyber police department in the case against the «magicwin» web portal. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) case, filed under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), stems from an Ahmedabad police FIR, which stated that a website — magicwin.games — had unauthorisedly hosted, streamed and broadcast matches during the world cup. The broadcast rights for the tournament were given to Star India Private Limited by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the ED said.

Govt sets sights on 100% FDI in insurance, weighs options to secure political clearance
foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the insurance sector from 74% to 100%, ToI reported on August 19. This initiative has the support of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai), but it will require political approval since amending the Insurance Act is necessary, said the report (by Sidhartha). The proposal aims to open up the sector further to foreign investors, as the current cap is seen as restrictive. Additionally, there are discussions around easing other FDI regulations, including the requirement that certain top management positions must be held by Indians. Officials, who are part of these conversations, revealed that a comprehensive set of amendments to the law is also in the works, although the timing for the bill's introduction is not yet decided. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade is also reviewing sectoral norms to encourage more unbridled investments. «Given that most large Indian companies and conglomerates have already invested in the insurance sector, officials said, it is time to allow 100% FDI in the sector since several foreign players with deep pockets are willing to come into the country but are not able to find a matching domestic player.»
