Brainstorming underway at highest echelons of India’s tax admin to figure out ways to deal with 'retrospective’ character of black money law
tax administration, a brainstorming is underway to figure out ways to deal with the ‘retrospective’ character of the Black Money law — a disputed feature of the stern statute that was passed nearly a decade ago to overcome the limitations of the Income Tax Act and target wealth stashed abroad. In the past few years, hundreds of writ petitions have been filed in multiple high courts of the country, challenging the sweeping power of the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act (BMA) that empowers the taxman to go after foreign bank accounts and assets which were opened or acquired years ago but discovered only recently by the I-T department. The petitions before the court have questioned whether a law — that could put the offender behind bars for 7 years — can be used to punish someone for an offence that was committed when the specific law did not exist. Such a safeguard allowed under the Constitution has put the powerful BMA in a limbo, with some of the courts granting stay, the tax office unable to recover money in many cases, and several assessments coming to a halt.

No evidence of 'UFOs or aliens' found by US government, reports Pentagon
UFOs or aliens, attributing most sightings to «ordinary objects» that are the result of misidentification. This conclusion was revealed in a 63-page report titled «Historical Record of US Government Involvement with Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP)» by the Pentagon. The report stated that the Department of Defense's All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) found no evidence of any US government investigation, research, or review panel verifying that a UAP represented extraterrestrial technology. The report is part of the US government's broader public examination of UFOs, or «unidentified anomalous phenomena,» which has included Congress hearings and open discussions with US space agency NASA officials. Despite these findings, US officials acknowledged that the public's perception of alien visits may not be dispelled. The report noted that the proliferation of television programs, books, movies, and internet and social media content focused on UAP-related topics has likely influenced the public conversation and reinforced beliefs within some sections of the population.

DMK says it has no links with 'drug lord' Jaffer Sadiq, decries attempts to connect him to party
Tamil Nadu Law Minister and DMK leader S Regupathy on Sunday asserted that his party has no links whatsoever with Jaffer Sadiq, the prime accused in an international drug trafficking case being investigated by the Narcotics Control Bureau. The DMK also warned of legal action against those who attempt to link Sadiq with either the party or its leaders. Speaking to reporters, Regupathy said the BJP regime has now deployed the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to «besmirch» the DMK regime after «misusing» the Enforcement Directorate, the Income Tax department and the Central Bureau of Investigation for that purpose. After the DMK assumed office in 2021, the state government has taken swift action against drug peddling and this has been lauded by courts, he said. «Today, they (Centre) are thinking of intimidating the DMK through the NCB.» Sadiq had held the post of Chennai West-NRI Wing Deputy Organiser in the DMK until he was recently dismissed by the party after allegations connecting him to drug trafficking surfaced. Regupathy blamed NCB Deputy Director General Gyaneshwar Singh for holding a press conference about Sadiq's arrest — even before the probe is completed — based on «false calculations» to tarnish the DMK's image and «to let the BJP gain political mileage» out of it just before the Lok Sabha polls.
