No foreign remittances licence, no Fema violation: Paytm to ED
Paytm Payments Bank has told the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that it does not possess the licence required for outward foreign remittances and hence the question of it violating Fema does not arise, people in the know told ET. AI-generated propaganda as effective as original propaganda, finds new study
propaganda is almost as effective and persuasive as real propaganda, a team of researchers have found after a study involving more than 8,000 US adults. They also warned that propagandists could use artificial intelligence (AI) to expose citizens to many articles, thereby increasing the volume of propaganda and making them harder to detect. For the study, researchers at the Stanford University and the Georgetown University in the US identified six English language articles, which, according to investigative journalists and the research community, likely originated from Iranian or Russian state-aligned covert propaganda campaigns.

Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has summoned Niranjan Hiranandani, co-founder and managing director of real estate developer Hiranandani Group, and his son Darshan Hiranandani in a forex violation case. It asked them to appear at the agency’s south Mumbai office on Monday. Darshan Hiranandani was informed by email as he is a non-resident Indian (NRI) and lives in Dubai, people aware of the matter told ET. On Thursday, the federal agency conducted searches at four sites linked to the realty firm in and around Mumbai, including Niranjan Hiranandani’s home as well as the registered and corporate offices of group entities. “There are certain transactions with which the duo need to be confronted and therefore they have been summoned on Monday,” said an official aware of the development. Flying around US with luggage is about to get more expensive
American Airlines and JetBlue Airways, United Airlines announced on Friday a surge in checked baggage fees for customers traveling within North America. Effective February 24, passengers flying economy in the U.S. with United will incur a charge of $40 for the first checked bag or $35 if paid in advance. The second checked bag will now cost $50 at the airport and $45 in advance. This move by major U.S. airlines comes against a backdrop of increasing maintenance and labor contract costs for carriers coupled with a weakening pricing power in the domestic market. Notably, this marks the third hike in checked baggage fees by United in the past four years. Previously, United raised prices for checked bags at airports by $5 to $35, with a reduced rate of $30 for online advance payments. The fee adjustments align with broader industry trends, as U.S. airlines collectively collected nearly $6.8 billion in baggage fees in 2022 and an additional $5.5 billion in the first nine months of 2023. These increases are reflective of the financial challenges faced by the industry, with rising costs attributed to factors such as increased wages, higher fuel costs, and other inflationary pressures.
