The Fed Will Keep Rates Low to Inflate Away the Debt
Fitch’s recent downgrade of the U.S. debt rating alarmed investors as the deficit and debt steadily increased. The downgrade sent 10-year Treasury bond yields above 4%, causing concern about America’s deteriorating financial condition. The problem is that if radical steps aren’t taken to curb spending, such will cause interest rates to rise. To wit:

Foodgrain stocks with FCI at 6-year low in August
wheat stocks held with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) is at its lowest in the month of August since 2017. However, the government has set a target of procuring 521 lakh metric tonnes of rice for the kharif marketing season 2023-24 against last year's 495 lakh metric tonnes. While the low stocks are worrying from inflation point of view, experts said it is not a concern from the food security angle. The total foodgrain stocks with the FCI on August 22 are 523.35 lakh metric tonnes, out of which 242.96 lakh metric tonnes are rice and 280.39 lakh metric tonnes is wheat. «While this is not worrying from a food security point of view since the stocks are still higher than the required norms, there is an overall hit to production this year which will keep the pressure on prices though government intervention by increasing domestic supplies can soften the price impact to some extent» said Dipti Deshpande, principal economist, Crisil, adding that India has historically stored more than required norms and so the current levels are not worrying. With acreage under rice increasing this kharif season, the country will be fine on the rice side, said Rahul Bajoria, MD & Head of EM Asia (ex-China) Economics, Barclays adding, «wheat could be a little bit of a worry.» Sowing of wheat happens in the rabi season which commences in October. The Centre's procurement of wheat under its minimum support price (MSP) program, which is crucial for keeping its wholesale rates under control, stood at around 26.14 million tonnes much below the target of 34 million tonnes. This has led the prices to stay firm, even during the harvest season, when they should be on the lower side.

India's July Russian oil imports dip; Saudi import down to 2-1/2-year low
crude oil imports from Russia dipped for the first time in nine months, while inbound shipments from Saudi Arabia tumbled to their lowest in 2-1/2 years following OPEC+ cuts, tanker data from trade and industry sources showed. Both China and India, the world's biggest and third-biggest oil importers, cut imports from Russia and Saudi Arabia in July after prices rose and as the two oil producers reduced output and crude oil shipments. Saudi Arabia volunteered to cut output by another 1 million barrels per day (bpd) from July through September, and Russia will reduce exports in August by 500,000 bpd, part of a deal among members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, a grouping know as OPEC+, to curb supplies and support prices. India's overall imports also declined 5.2% from June to 4.4 million bpd oil in July, the data showed, as several refining plants are shut for maintenance during monsoon season.Russian oil imports declined 5.7% to 1.85 million bpd and Saudi shipments fell by 26% to 470,000 bpd, the data showed. India imports more than 80% of its overall oil needs. Indian refiners that have been diversifying their oil import sources to cut costs began snapping up Russian oil at a discount as some Western companies stopped purchasing from Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. India's import of Russian oil may now decline further in August and September, however, as refiners plan maintenance at their plants and as Russian crude prices are above the $60-a-barrel ceiling imposed by the European Union and G7 economies after spot discounts shrank, sources said. Russia was still the top oil supplier to India in July, though, followed by Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Rupee outperforms EM Asia peers even as it approaches record low

A reserves stockpile of $600 billion, more than $16 billion worth of foreign inflows for stocks this year and economic growth forecast at 6.5% are among the reasons behind the optimism for Neuberger Berman Singapore and Columbia Threadneedle Investments. “The reserve number is very comfortable right now,” said Prashant Singh, senior portfolio manager for emerging-markets debt at Neuberger Berman Singapore, who favors the rupee.

Bitcoin price drops to a two-month low — Did pro traders benefit?
The price of Bitcoin fell by 11.5% from Aug. 16 to Aug. 18, resulting in $900 million worth of long positions being liquidated and causing the price to hit a two-month low. Before the drop, many traders expected a breakout in volatility that would push the price upward, but that was obviously not the case. With the substantial liquidations, it’s important to address whether professional traders gained from the price crash.
