Aditya Birla Group makes USD 20 bn investment as it sets eyes on scaling biz: KM Birla
Aditya Birla Group has invested about USD 20 billion, mainly in manufacturing space, as it looks to be among the top two players across the segments it operates in, a top company official said on Saturday. Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, Aditya Birla Group Chairman KM Birla said the group firm has taken tough decisions, including the acquisition of Novelis by Hindalco, to build scale and aims to expand cement business from 100 million tonnes to 200 million tonnes over the next 10 years. He said most of the group's investments are long-term, with a business outlook over the next 15-20 years, while consumer businesses have a shorter span. «We have USD 20 billion of announced investments that are on the ground. Obviously, you look at it because a lot of them are in the manufacturing space. You would look at the next 15-20 years. Shorter than that doesn't make sense in that kind of business… If, on the other hand, you're looking at fashion retail or jewellery retail or financial services, then you are looking at a much shorter time frame,» Birla said.

Lithium-ion battery demand in India to grow to 127 gigawatt hour by FY30
lithium-ion battery demand in India is set to grow exponentially to 54 gigawatt hours (GWh) by FY27 and 127 GWh by FY30, as the country sets an ambitious target to meet 50% of its primary energy requirement from renewable energy by 2030. Currently, domestic lithium-ion battery storage demand of 15 GWh is being almost entirely met through imports of lithium-ion cells and batteries. India imports almost its entire requirement of Li-ion batteries. However, CareEdge Ratings expects India's import dependency to decline to 20 per cent by FY27, despite significant growth in demand due to large-scale integrated capacities being built for Li-ion battery storage.

Panel recommends health supplements claiming to cure, mitigate disease be classified as drugs
If accepted, these products would come under the oversight of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) instead of the current regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). According to the TOI report, the committee, led by former health secretary Apurva Chandra, argued that supplements making health claims should undergo stricter scrutiny before licensing. This would also mean harsher penalties for companies making false claims about disease prevention or mitigation.

No brakes on tyre price hikes likely for now
natural rubber prices in the international markets are set to rise further as manufacturers have guided for further hikes in the ongoing quarter. According to them an increase of 2-6% taken since the beginning of FY25 is not commensurate with the increase on account of natural rubber prices. This, in turn, has jacked up raw material prices as percentage to net sales by 6-8%. Higher input costs coupled with a tepid demand from truck and carmakers dented profitability at all tyre makers in the second quarter over the year-ago period.

Electrical goods testing allowed at parts makers' labs
quality control regime for electrical goods to allow testing and certification at laboratories owned by equipment manufacturers, officials said. These equipment- like circuit breakers — can now be covered under a modified quality control regime. This relaxation in norm will benefit companies wanting to shift electrical equipment manufacturing out from China, they told ET, since these products can be conveniently tested at more facilities. «Effectively, India has doubled the number of labs where quality of electrical goods like circuit breakers can be vetted. These certifications are valid under Scheme X of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS),» a senior official told ET, adding that the heavy industries ministry is the first to allow testing under this scheme. With this, enforcement of the Electrical Equipment (Quality Control) Order, 2020 (EEQCO, 2020) can now begin. «The domestic industry was concerned since there is inadequate testing infrastructure to certify products for compliance with the QCO,» the official said.

The quarterly gross domestic product figure published by the Office for National Statistics today (15 November) compared with an expansion of 0.5% in the second quarter and came in below economist consensus for 0.2% growth. Production fell by 0.5% in September, mostly as a result of a decline in manufacturing output. This marked a significant departure from August, when that figure stood at 0.5%. Overall, the sector recorded a 0.2% decline over the three months to September. Similarly, services output notched up just 0.1% in the third quarter, but monthly figures for September showed ...

TN CM lays foundation stone for Rs 1,000 cr Taiwanese Dean Shoes factory in Ariyalur
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday laid the foundation stone for a new manufacturing unit of the Taiwanese company Dean Shoes at the SIPCOT industrial park, Jayankondam, here. The footwear major Long Yin Investment (Dean Shoes) will invest Rs 1,000 crore for the project in the industrially backward district and it will generate employment to 15,000 people. This investment would further establish Tamil Nadu as a global hub for non-leather footwear manufacturing and would transform more districts like Perambalur, Ranipet and Ariyalur, driving distributed growth across the state, Industries Minister T R B Rajaa said. «More importantly, 90 per cent of these jobs are for women, a key pillar of the Dravidian Model,» the minister claimed.

Donald Trump's transition team aims to kill Joe Biden EV tax credit
Donald Trump's transition team is planning to kill the $7,500 consumer tax credit for electric-vehicle purchases as part of broader tax-reform legislation, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Ending the tax credit could have grave implications for an already stalling U.S. EV transition. And yet representatives of Tesla — by far the nation's biggest EV maker — have told a Trump-transition committee they support ending the subsidy, said the two sources, speaking on condition of anonymity. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, one of Trump's biggest backers and the world's richest person, said in July that killing the subsidy might slightly hurt Tesla sales but would be «devastating» to its U.S. EV competitors, which include legacy automakers such as General Motors.

India in a sweet spot: Moody's report highlights robust economic growth momentum amid inflation challenges
inflation, according to a recent report by Moody’s. The ratings agency projects India’s GDP to grow by 7.2% in 2024, followed by 6.6% in 2025 and 6.5% in 2026. In the second quarter of 2024, India’s real GDP expanded 6.7% year-over-year, fueled by a resurgence in household consumption, increased investment, and solid manufacturing activity. Indicators of economic health, including positive manufacturing and services PMIs, robust credit growth, and consumer optimism, point to continued growth in the third quarter. Household spending is expected to remain strong, buoyed by festive season purchases and rising rural demand as agriculture rebounds. Private investment is likely to be supported by increasing capacity utilization, strong business sentiment, and the government’s ongoing infrastructure investments, said the report.

Lenovo plans global factory expansion as Q2 results beat; eyes AI growth
Lenovo will further diversify its supply chain and plans to open more manufacturing facilities outside China amid global geopolitical uncertainty, Chairman Yang Yuanqing said. Lenovo, the world's largest PC maker, has most of its plants in China, a common situation in the electronics industry that creates potential vulnerability as US President-elect Donald Trump threatens to impose 60% tariffs on Chinese imports. Yang told Reuters that while it's too early to predict the new US administration's policies, Lenovo has an advantage over competitors in hedging such risks through its more diversified manufacturing base and sourcing strategy, as well as balanced regional revenue streams.
