(Reuters) — Wall Street's top indexes opened lower on Wednesday as investors assessed mixed earnings from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) ahead of a Federal Reserve rate hike that could push borrowing costs to their highest since the global financial crisis.

The busiest week of the summer on Wall Street has arrived, with all eyes on the upcoming Federal Reserve rate decision, as well as earnings from some of the biggest companies in the world.

Global equities struggled on Wednesday as investors braced for more policy-tightening from the Federal Reserve, even as results from some of the biggest European and American companies hinted at a softening economy. 

Ant Group, a company backed by billionaire Jack Ma, is reportedly planning to restructure and cut ties to some operations that are not core parts of its Chinese financial business. The move prepares the company for a potential initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong. 

Tata Motors, a prominent player in the automobile industry, unveiled its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2023-24 (Q1FY24) on July 25. During this period, the company achieved a consolidated net profit of ₹3,202 crore, showcasing its strong financial performance.The revenue from operations witnessed a remarkable surge of 42 per cent, reaching ₹102,236.08 crore in the June quarter.

Investing.com — Stocks were rising amid a flurry of corporate earnings, as investors waited on the Federal Reserve's next decision on interest rates, due out Wednesday.

A decision by the Nasdaq stock exchange to shelf its plans to launch a crypto custody service has led other US firms to also reconsider their planned push into crypto.

Nifty ended below 19,700 levels after inching very close to 20,000 levels last week. Sectorally, PSU Bank pack emerged as the top laggard. From the Nifty pack, top gainers in a range-bound trade were stocks like Hindalco, Tata Steel, JSW Steel and UltraTech Cement.

It's no secret that large U.S. tech companies have experienced a reduction in their weighting on the Nasdaq 100 index after the 'special' rebalancing. The weightage of the 7 biggest companies in the index has decreased from 56% to 44%.

Dow Jones Industrial Average led Wall Street higher on Monday and notched its longest winning streak in six years as investors bet on sectors beyond technology in a week filled with earnings reports and a Federal Reserve meeting. «What you're seeing now is people broadening the breadth of the market,» said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading and derivatives at the Schwab Center for Financial Research. «People are starting to maybe take some profits (in tech) and invest in other parts of the markets that they might see a little bit better bargain.» Investors are awaiting Microsoft, Google-owner Alphabet and Meta Platforms earnings this week, which will show whether their stocks justify sky-high valuations.
