Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing for collection of price trends, gearing up for revision of the base year to 2024 from 2012 and weightage of items tracked for Consumer Price Index to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of data. The revision of the CPI base year is currently under progress and weights for the items will be derived from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2022-23, the ministry said. The inflation data based on the new base year will be released in 2026. The CPI tracks monthly retail prices of goods and services, currently covering 299 items across 1,181 rural and 1,114 urban markets. In the revised CPI series, the weightage of food items is likely to be reduced based on reduced share of food in overall consumption.

Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that Muslims were being victimised and their masjids and shrines targeted under a well-planned conspiracy, despite the country being secular as per the Constitution. Abdullah told reporters here on the sidelines of the annual day of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar that if someone doesn't believe that this country is secular let them remove the word 'secular' through an Act in Parliament. Abdullah said Muslim victimisation is happening in the name of «not appeasing the community». «Why are our darasgahs and masjids being targeted under a well-thought conspiracy? I have repeated it several times that you may believe in not appeasing the Muslim community. We also don't ask for any appeasement. But not appeasing us (Muslims) doesn't mean you will target us. Don't target and victimise us in the name of not appeasing us,» said Abdullah.

Barwa Adda Expressway (BAEL), have agreed to restructure the ₹1,269 crore debt of the toll company, allowing them to classify the account as standard to recover their dues. The restructuring documents are being finalised and creditors expect to complete the process and book the recovery in the current quarter, people familiar with the plans said. An IL&FS spokesperson confirmed that lenders have approved the restructuring of its ₹1,269 crore aggregate debt.

Delhi court on Thursday sent AAP's Uttam Nagar MLA Naresh Balyan to one-day judicial custody in an alleged organised crime case. Special judge for lawmakers, Kaveri Baweja, sent Balyan to jail, considering that the arguments on Delhi police application seeking his 10-day custody for interrogation in the case under stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) would take more time. Special public prosecutor Akhand Pratap Singh, representing Delhi police, submitted that Balyan's interrogation was required to unearth the larger conspiracy in the case.

According to the paper, rural areas in states like Jharkhand (233% growth) and Bihar (6x growth) have seen significant growth while northeastern states like Nagaland have seen a jump to 71.1% from 15.7% during the period.

It also underlined that there is no mention of any «cooling off» period in the Constitution for post-retirement assignments for judges. SC judges retire at the age of 65, while HC judges demit office at 62. District judges retire at the age of 60. «There is no such proposal for increasing the retirement age of judges of the Supreme Court and high courts,» Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said.

Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) recently clarified that under exceptional circumstances, a stock broker can upload the same mobile number or email address for more than one client if the clients belong to the same family. A retail investor can use his number or email ID to operate his family members’ demat accounts under certain conditions. Family for this purpose would mean self, spouse, dependent children and dependent parents. SEBI said that this is possible only under certain circumstances and on the client's written request. This rule will come into force with immediate effect. According to a SEBI circular on December 3, 2024, “Master circular states the following regarding uploading of mobile number and e-mail by stock brokers: Stock Brokers shall ensure that separate mobile number/email address is uploaded for each client. However, under exceptional circumstances, the stock broker may, at the specific written request of a client, upload the same mobile number / email address for more than one client provided such clients belong to one family. Ericsson is working to introduce artificial intelligence agents in its telecom products and services, with the aim to make network operations autonomous.
