ETMarkets Fund Manager Talk: This PMS fund manager sees mid, smallcap stocks driving consistent alpha returns
Midcap and smallcap stocks have registered strong gains in the recent months and outperformed their largecap peers. Torus Oro Portfolio Management Ltd believes that this segment of the market can drive consistent alpha generation for investors. “The mid and smallcap space provides ample opportunities to invest in businesses having great growth prospects, product differentiation, and improving business economics,” said Nitin Agrawal, CEO of the portfolio management firm. Agrawal, however, said it was important to keep in mind the underlying risk and fundamentals in check. Edited excerpts:Benchmark indices have rallied close to 16% in 5 months. How comfortable are you with the current valuations?India’s growth story has picked up momentum over the last few months, leading benchmark indices to lifetime highs. Despite the weak global macro factors, the Indian economy witnessed rising growth momentum, moderation in inflation and better trade balance. Further, Indian companies reported strong revenue growth and improvement in margins. This led to increased allocation from FIIs and, thus, India witnessed strong fund inflows over the last few months. Even at the current levels and based on expected EPS growth, we believe that the Indian market is fairly valued. We are comfortable with valuations from a long-term horizon perspective.

Box Office: 'Barbie' continues to rule as ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ sinks
Last Voyage of the Demeter" struggled in its opening weekend, earning a meager $6.5 million. The movie, based on a chapter from Bram Stoker's «Dracula,» which follows the transport of the vampire's coffin from Transylvania to England, was distributed by Universal. In contrast, "Barbie" continued its dominance, securing the top spot for the fourth consecutive weekend. The Warner Bros. release generated $33.7 million, pushing its total earnings to an impressive $526.3 million. Taking second place was Universal's «Oppenheimer,» directed by Christopher Nolan. The film earned $18.8 million during the weekend, bringing its domestic earnings for the portrayal of atomic bomb creator J. Robert Oppenheimer's life to $264.3 million. This achievement solidifies its position as Nolan's fourth-highest grossing movie domestically, trailing behind «Inception,» «The Dark Knight,» and «The Dark Knight Rises.» «Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,» produced by Paramount Pictures, secured third place with $15.7 million. The animated feature, co-produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Productions, has amassed $72.8 million in domestic earnings after two weeks. Warner Bros.' «Meg 2: The Trench» experienced a 60% drop in earnings from its $30 million opening, garnering $12.7 million and landing in fourth place. The adventure film's total domestic earnings now stand at $54.5 million. «The Last Voyage of the Demeter» had a production cost of $45 million but failed to attract audiences, marking another disappointment for Steven Spielberg's Amblin production company.

Lionel Richie cancels Madison Square Garden show. See what happened
Lionel Richie and Earth Wind & Fire canceled their Madison Square Garden show on Saturday. The show was sold-out and was supposed to start at 7:30 PM ET. However, it was postponed an hour after it was supposed to begin. Lionel Richie blamed the cancellation on bad weather. He said he couldn't fly into New York because of the poor weather conditions. Around 20,000 people were waiting for the show to start. Many of them had come from out of town and had already spent money on travel and hotel expenses. Lionel Richie tweeted about the situation at 8:31 p.m. He said, «Due to severe weather and being unable to land in the NY and surrounding areas, I’m unable to make it to the show tonight.» He also announced that the show would be rescheduled for Monday, August 14. He expressed his disappointment and said he was looking forward to performing for everyone. He also mentioned that tickets for the canceled show would still be valid for the rescheduled show on Monday. Earth Wind and Fire were also part of the show. They are now set to perform at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Monday. It's not clear if they will be able to make it to the rescheduled show in New York.
