Reflections on a transformative year as Ficci president
My role as Ficci president involved close engagement with GoI to discuss a range of topics related to economic growth. This was enabled by inputs from industry members, ranging from large companies to MSMEs, the in-depth analysis from a fantastic team at Ficci, and most importantly, a gov that is open to listening and working closely with industry. The year began with a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We outlined priorities linked to GoI’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ goal. Key focus areas were: Make in India, women-led development, farm prosperity, and sustainability. A set of actions were outlined for Ficci committees, which comprised CEOs across a wide range of industries and companies. McKinsey provided support in developing the framework and enabling key outcomes.

William Watson: Sorry, Pierre Poilievre — reason beats rhyme in policy-making
First came Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s “Axe the tax” ads targeting the carbon tax. Now the Alberta government is running a “Scrap the cap” campaign, in reference to the federal government’s plan to — for purely performative reasons — impose a cap on emissions from the oil and gas sector.

Gold price today: Gold rate dips from one-week high. Check latest value
Gold prices eased from a one-week high on Wednesday as the dollar strengthened, though safe-haven demand linked to Russia-Ukraine tensions helped cap further losses, as per a report. Spot gold was down 0.3 per cent at 2,623.48 per ounce, as of 1047 (GMT), after hitting its highest levels since November 11 earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures dropped 0.2 per cent to $2,626.80, Reuters reported. The U.S. dollar rebounded after hitting a one-week low. A stronger U.S. currency makes bullion more expensive for overseas buyers.

Trump’s plan to end birthright citizenship, will his son Barron be a U.S. citizen? Here's all you need to know
Donald Trump's plan to terminate birthright citizenship would have major repercussions for his youngest son, Barron, according to a Facebook post from November 16. Part of the post's text says that he's not a citizen and has to go because he was born three months before his mother became a US citizen. The claim was reposted thousands of times on TikTok and X, and it garnered hundreds of likes and shares on Threads. However, for a number of reasons, Barron Trump's citizenship in the United States would not be impacted by his father's proposal to become president. Children born in the nation to at least one parent who is already a citizen or lawful permanent resident would not be covered; it would only cover future births. Both of Barron Trump's parents fulfilled that condition at the time of his birth, as quoted in a report by USA Today.

Vice President-elect JD Vance on Tuesday tucked an announcement of the search at the end of a social-media post that began with him referring to someone as a “mouth breathing imbecile." Vance said he had recently met with Trump to interview people to be the bureau’s director, in the search for a candidate who would “dismantle the deep state." He later deleted the post.

Why Donald Trump's win is good news for Indian IT firms, says India's 3rd largest tech co's boss Rishad Premji
Wipro Executive Chairman Rishad Premji has voiced optimism about the potential impact of Donald Trump’s return to the US presidency on India’s IT services sector. Speaking at an event in Bengaluru on November 19, Premji stated that Trump’s policies, which he described as «pro-business and pro-growth,» would benefit the technology services industry both in India and globally. «The government is very pro-business and pro-growth, which helps all of our customers, ultimately benefiting partners here in India and worldwide,» Premji said, highlighting the potential for tax cuts and deregulation to positively influence business activities. This optimistic outlook follows a period of uncertainty for India’s IT companies, many of which have faced challenges as clients reduced spending on discretionary projects due to ongoing macroeconomic issues and inflationary pressures. Premji suggested that Trump's focus on corporate tax reductions and easing business regulations could help stimulate customer spending and contribute to growth in the sector.

Putin, ascendant in Ukraine, eyes contours of a Trump peace deal
Putin is open to discussing a Ukraine ceasefire deal with Donald Trump but rules out making any major territorial concessions and insists Kyiv abandon ambitions to join NATO, five sources with knowledge of Kremlin thinking told Reuters. U.S. President-elect Trump, who has vowed to swiftly end the conflict, is returning to the White House at a time of Russian ascendancy. Moscow controls a chunk of Ukraine about the size of the American state of Virginia and is advancing at the fastest pace since the early days of the 2022 invasion. In the first detailed reporting of what President Putin would accept in any deal brokered by Trump, the five current and former Russian officials said the Kremlin could broadly agree to freeze the conflict along the front lines.
