Delhi government has decided to extend its existing excise policy by six months due to the time needed for coming up with a new liquor trade regime, officials said on Thursday. The policy has been extended till March 31, 2024 following the requisite approvals from the Delhi government and the lieutenant governor, a senior officer said. A proposal of the excise department to extend the policy, implemented on September 1 last year, was sent for the LG's nod after it was cleared by the government.

The rupee closed at 83.22 against the U.S. dollar compared with a close of 83.23 in the previous session. Most Asian currencies weakened versus the greenback with the Thai baht leading losses with a 0.51% decline. Likely consistent dollar supply from India's central bank helped the rupee hold its ground, traders said. The RBI wasn't aggressively selling dollars but was seen offering the currency at 83.23-83.24 levels via state-run banks, a foreign exchange trader at a state-run bank said. The dollar index climbed to a fresh near 10-month high at 106.34 in Asia hours, amid prospects of higher-for-longer policy rates in the U.S. Brent crude oil futures rose over 1% to $94.94 per barrel. The rupee fell to a low of 83.24 on Wednesday.

McKinsey & Co has agreed to pay $230 million in its latest settlement to resolve lawsuits alleging it fueled a US opioid epidemic through its role advising drug manufacturers, according to court documents filed Tuesday. Thousands of lawsuits, brought by US local governments, schools, Native American communities, and parents on behalf of children born with withdrawal symptoms, accused McKinsey of strategizing with drug manufacturers to aggressively market prescription opioids «to maximize opioid revenues», the filings showed. McKinsey will pay $207 million to resolve claims by counties and municipalities, and $23 million to resolve claims by public school districts. Opioids are the main cause of drug overdose deaths in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with more than 75 percent of all drug overdose deaths in 2021 linked to them. McKinsey had already paid more than $640 million in 2021 to resolve lawsuits raised by 50 state attorneys-general over its work for bankrupt OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma and others. Tuesday's court filing said McKinsey had created and implemented marketing strategies for Purdue «before and after» the manufacturer's first guilty plea in 2007 relating to misbranding of OxyContin.
