SC asks ex-Delhi minister Satyendar Jain not to use proceedings before it as ruse to delay trial in ED case
Supreme Court on Monday told former Delhi minister Satyendar Kumar Jain, an accused in a money laundering case, to not make pendency of the proceedings before the apex court a ruse to delay the trial in the case. A bench of Justices AS Bopanna and Bela M Trivedi, which extended Jain's interim bail till October 9, made the remark after the Enforcement Directorate complained about the AAP leader seeking repeated adjournments in the trial court. «It is made clear that pendency of proceedings before this court or any reason shall not be used as an excuse or ruse to defer proceedings before the trial court, but the petitioner would diligently take part in proceedings before the trial court and allow the case to progress,» the bench ordered. At the outset, a counsel appearing for Jain sought a short adjournment in the case, saying senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, who usually represents the former minister is unavailable. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate, did not oppose the request but said Jain was seeking repeated adjournment of proceedings to delay the hearing before the trial court. Requesting the court to order Jain to not seek any further adjournments before the trial court, Raju submitted, «As many as 16 dates have been taken in trial court just to get documents under Section 207 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (supplying copies of statements recorded by the police, relevant documents, or extracts from the documents to the accused).

Vigilance Bureau books Punjab's ex-finance minister Manpreet Badal, five others in land buying case
Punjab Vigilance Bureau has registered a case against former state finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal and five others in connection with alleged irregularities in the purchase of a property in Bathinda, a top official said on Monday. Apart from Badal, who is now a BJP leader, and former Bathinda municipal corporation commissioner Bikramjit Shergill, the other four booked in the case on Sunday night have been identified as Rajiv Kumar, Amandeep Singh, Vikas Arora and Pankaj, the official said. Rajiv Kumar and Amandeep Singh have been arrested, the officer added. The bureau had launched an investigation into the matter based on former MLA Sarup Chand Singla's 2021 complaint alleging irregularities in the purchase of the property at a prime location in Bathinda. BJP leader Singla, who was earlier with the Shiromani Akali Dal, had alleged that Badal, as a minister in the previous Congress dispensation, had abused his position to convert commercial plots into a residential plot for himself. The case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections 420 (cheating) and 468 (forgery) and also under the Prevention of Corruption Act. During the investigation, the Vigilance Bureau had interrogated Badal in July.

How can senior citizens protect themselves from financial exploitations by their own families?
Senior citizens typically rely on their financial savings, investments, pension or real estate to fund their retirement years. Protecting these financial assets ensures that they have a steady source of income to cover living expenses and maintain a decent quality of life. The absence of this financial cushion can jeopardise their day-to-day expenses and medical requirements. While there is much talk about protecting senior citizens from online fraudsters because of their ignorance and vulnerability, what is often ignored is the risk they face from their own families, including their children, siblings and other relatives.

Tigst Assefa shatters the women's marathon world record by more than 2 minutes in Berlin
Tigst Assefa broke the women's world record by more than two minutes Sunday at the Berlin Marathon, as Eliud Kipchoge won the men's race for the fifth time but couldn't break his own record. Ethiopian runner Assefa, the winner in Berlin a year ago, ran 2 hours, 11 minutes, 53 seconds to break the previous women's record of 2:14:04 set by Brigid Kotsgei at the Chicago Marathon in 2019. Kipchoge ran alone from 32 kilometers (20 miles) onward but slowed slightly toward the end. His time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, 42 seconds was more than a minute and a half off the record he set in Berlin last year. Kipchoge broke the two-hour barrier in Vienna in 2019 when he ran 1:59:40 but it was not officially considered the world record.

Assam government to soon bring a law to prevent sale-purchase of land to non-indigenous communities
Assam government will soon bring a law to prevent Sale-Purchase of Land to Non-Indigenous Communities within 8-Km vicinity of Batadrava Thaan: On the auspicious occasion of the 575th birth anniversary of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday inaugurated a number of infrastructural projects at Batadrava Thaan costing a total of ₹22 crores. Foundation stones for the projects inaugurated today — a Satriya Sora, a conference hall, the Damodar Ata Tourist Guest House and the office complex — were laid on April 16, 2021, thus leading to the completion of their construction in just 17 months. This apart, Sarma formally launched the year-long celebration of the 575th birth anniversary celebration of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. Sarma, paying rich tributes to neo-Vaishnavite saint Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev on his 575th birth anniversary, said the Government of Assam has been relentlessly working for development of the revered Batadrava Thaan and the projects inaugurated today manifest that very tireless commitment of the current dispensation in the State. He added that in days to come, steps will be taken to beautify the two ponds in the Thaan premises, build parking spaces for visitors' vehicles, washrooms-toilets for the convenience of the devotees, among others. Sarma said soon a law would be enacted to prevent sale and purchase of land within the 8-Km range of Batadrava Thaan premises to non-indigenous communities. The District Commissioner has been instructed not to give his assent to sale-purchase of land to and by people belonging to non-indigenous communities till the Act is brought in and implemented, Sarma added. Chief Minister Dr.

Chip startup Rivos says Apple intimidates workers who ‘dare to leave’
Chip startup Rivos is countersuing Apple Inc., claiming the tech giant forces employees to sign restrictive agreements that prevent them from working elsewhere and stifle up-and-coming companies that hire its staff. The countersuit filed Friday by Rivos and six ex-Apple employees in a San Jose federal court escalates an acrimonious trade secret feud that began when Apple last year sued Rivos and former employees who joined the startup. Rivos is pushing back by asking the court to rule that Apple’s “overbroad” non-disclosure and non-solicit agreements are unenforceable.

Russian foreign minister lambastes the West but barely mentions Ukraine in UN speech
Russia's top diplomat denounced the United States and the West on Saturday as self-interested defenders of a fading international power structure, but he didn't discuss his country's war in Ukraine in his speech to the UN General Assembly. «The US and its subordinate Western collective are continuing to fuel conflicts which artificially divide humanity into hostile blocks and hamper the achievement of overall aims. They're doing everything they can to prevent the formation of a genuine multipolar world order,» Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. «They are trying to force the world to play according to their own self-centered rules,» he said. As for the 19-month war in Ukraine, he recapped some historical complaints going back to the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union, and alluded to the billions of dollars that the US and Western allies have spent in supporting Ukraine.
