Drones, LiDAR put in use to map Asia's largest slum redevelopment project
Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has embraced cutting-edge technologies to survey and document Asia's largest slum, officials said. Drones and remote sensing technology Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) are being used to map the 620 acres densely populated Dharavi slums. This is to ensure accuracy, transparency, and efficiency in a redevelopment project of this scale and complexity. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd, in which the Adani Group holds an 80 per cent stake along with the state government, plans to turn 620 acres of prime land, about three-quarters of the size of New York's Central Park, into a glitzy urban hub. About 7 lakh living in rickety shanties with open sewers and shared toilets in the densely populated slums, close to Mumbai's international airport, are to be given flats up to 350 square feet free of cost.

When AI meets cloud ERP: Driving the digital shift in India’s automotive manufacturing
“I was pretty dismayed by the IT being deployed in this industry. It was minimal a decade back,” said Vinnie Mehta, General Secretary of the Automotive Components Manufacturing Association of India (ACMA). “Then came the pandemic, and the entire industry transformed itself, and that was something wonderful to have happened,” Mehta added. Mehta said that everyone jumped onto the IT bandwagon in the industry almost overnight, to the point that ERP systems have now become integral to managing the entire value chain. “It is only fitting, given the fact that the whole automotive value chain contributes to around 7% of India’s GDP, and the auto component industry is half of that. Today, it is hard to envisage a manufacturing value chain without the ERP systems,” he said.

Have high hopes from GST cut on health, life insurance? Here's why a drastic fall is unlikely to benefit policyholders
GST rate of 18% on life and health insurance policies. After union minister Nitin Gadkari raised this issue, the people started hoping for the rate cut to become a reality as it was taken for consideration by the GST council. However, despite several meetings in the past the GST council is yet to take a final call on this issue. The issue is likely to be taken up again in the next GST council meeting on December 21. However, the question remains how likely a reduction is and whether it will really benefit the policyholders. Government gets a significant revenue from GST on insurance policies. The government has answered in Lok Sabha that more than Rs 16,000 crores was collected by levying Goods and Services Tax (GST) on health and life insurance policies issued through FY 2023-24. It will not be an easy decision to forego such a big source of revenue. Considering this new information and also the public demand for lower GST rates on health and life insurance, a significant rate cut appears a challenging task for government. Moreover, insurance companies are facing a challenge if such a reduction will actually help them in lowering their costs. They want assurances from the government that if the GST rate is lowered, the companies would still be able to claim input tax credit on the insurance policies sold. If the government does not assure this then it will add a cost component for them which is going to increase insurance premiums instead of decreasing.

Open Cloud Compute: A UPI moment for AI?
But compute is awfully expensive. For a country like India, which needs scale and cheaper compute, the cost is only going to get increasingly higher, making it inaccessible to large sections. Open Cloud Compute (OCC), an initiative of People+AI is looking to solve this very issue. It is founded by EkStep Foundation, which Infosys cofounder Nandan Nilekani started in 2015 and is trying to offer an alternative for larger players by creating a network of micro data centres.

PEs seek access to majority stake in US healthcare BPO
Blackstone and Carlyle are competing to acquire a majority stake in Texas-headquartered healthcare BPO Access Healthcare, said people aware of the development. All these firms are due to submit non-binding offers by the middle of December for a 60-70% stake in the company, valuing it at $1.4-1.5 billion. The quantum of the stake sale is expected to be decided over subsequent rounds of negotiations, said the people cited. Weak Q2 GDP may prompt RBI to go for a CRR cut: Experts
Economists from the Bank of Baroda, ICICI Bank, HSBC and Standard Chartered now expect a CRR cut later this week as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) would rely on the CRR lever, instead of the policy rates, to support growth through liquidity injection. CRR refers to the cash lenders must set aside as part of prudential norms. These funds, kept with the RBI, don't earn any interest. The pressure on the rupee, lower government cash balance and foreign portfolio (FPI) outflows have combined to cast a shadow on growth, although concerns over inflations haven't yet receded.
