Drilling to prepare an escape passage for 41 workers — trapped at Silkyara tunnel collapse site for a week now — remained suspended on Sunday, while Union Minister Nitin Gadkari who reviewed the rescue operation said another large diameter pipeline was being pushed through the rubble to provide essential supplies to them. An American auger machine which was brought as a replacement had to be stopped on Friday afternoon after it hit some hard surface while drilling through the rubble in the collapsed part of the under-construction tunnel, following which officials on Saturday began preparations to drill a vertical hole from the top of the hill.

DK Shivakumar on Sunday said BJP's veteran leader BS Yediyurappa had advised him to implement just two election guarantees this year in a revelation that may embarrass the Opposition party. Shivakumar, who is also the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), said the BJP leader told him it was enough to implement just two guarantees in the first year when he met him ahead of the swearing-in of the Congress regime in May. He said okay to Yediyurappa with a smile before leaving his house, Shivakumar said speaking at the Indira Gandhi birth anniversary celebrations at the KPCC office. «But we decided to implement all the five guarantees in the first Cabinet meeting itself. The government would implement the fifth guarantee of Yuvanidhi in December,” he added.

Mizoram following intense gunfights with militia group People's Defence Force (PDF), were sent back to their country on Sunday, an official said. With these, a total of 74 Myanmar army personnel, who crossed over to India after their camps were overrun by militia groups in the recent gunfight, have been escorted back to their country, she said. These 29 soldiers had entered Mizoram on November 16 after their camp at Tuibual in Myanmar's Chin state, a few km from the international border, was overrun by Chin National Defence Force (CNDF) — a local militia group affiliated with the PDF.

Nitin Gadkari, who visited the Uttarkashi tunnel collapse site on Sunday morning, said he expects the rescuers will be able to reach the victims who are trapped inside it in another two to two-and-a-half days. «If the auger machine works properly, we will be able to reach them (victims) in the next 2 to 2.5 days,» Gadkari told the reporters from the tunnel site. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also accompanied the Union minister. Minister Gadkari apprised that those private tunnel experts working for various organisations in the region have also been roped in for the rescue efforts. Food, medicine, and oxygen were being provided to those trapped inside through pipes.

Goa Public Works Department Minister Nilesh Cabral resigned from the Pramod Sawant-led cabinet on Sunday to make way for the induction of MLA Aleixo Sequeira. Sequeira was among the eight MLAs who switched over from the opposition Congress to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the coastal state last year.
