(Reuters) — U.S. stock index futures edged up in light trading on the final day of a turbulent 2023, with the benchmark S&P 500 and the Dow hovering around record-highs on growing expectations the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates early next year.

(Reuters) — U.S. stock index futures kicked off the last week of the year on a positive note on Tuesday as markets resumed trading after Christmas holidays amid strong expectations of early rate cuts by the Federal Reserve next year.

Investors were still digesting data released on Friday that showed U.S. prices fell in November for the first time in more than 3-1/2 years, underscoring the economy's durability.

Bonds rallied and equities paused as a fresh batch of soft inflation data boosted the likelihood of interest-rate cuts, but also underscored the risk of an economic downturn.

European shares gained on Wednesday on rising bets of interest rate cuts following softer inflation data from the UK and Germany, while a rise in commodity prices lifted resource stocks. The pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.3% by 0818 GMT, with energy and telecom sectors leading gains. Data showed German producer prices fell more than expected in November, while British inflation dropped way more than expected last month, with the headline rate falling to its September 2021 lows, strengthening the case for rate cuts. The German DAX was up 0.2%, while the UK's FTSE 100 jumped 1.3%. Energy shares rose 1.1%, while basic resources stocks gained 0.4% on higher prices of most commodities. Telefonica jumped 6.3% as the Spanish government is set to acquire around 10% stake in the telecoms giant. The broader sector was up 1%. Deutsche Post lost 1.3% after U.S.

Investing.com-- Gold prices fell slightly on Tuesday after several Federal Reserve officials downplayed expectations that a dovish pivot by the central bank was imminent, which helped stem recent losses in the dollar.

After keeping interest rates unchanged last week, the US Fed signaled its intention to begin reducing interest rates next year.

U.S. stocks are poised to end 2023 on a high note amid investor optimism that the historic tightening of monetary policy is likely over, and interest rates will fall next year following a dovish pivot by the Federal Reserve.
